Appearance

A scar in the shape of an X sits along the right of Hei's bald, reddish-skinned head. Below it run thin eyes, a chin cut square, lips that are notably large, and a nose ending in a sharp point. Black whiskers gather into a goatee, and his height adds to an imposing frame.

Red leather dominates what he wears: the top is sleeveless, the gloves match, and a set of goggles in the same tone rests against his throat. He finishes the look off with sunglasses in grey, earrings of silver, and trousers and shoes both colored black.

Personality

Mercilessness and pride drive him in equal measure. The men under Nipthal fell to him with no hesitation on his part, and even with his own followers laid out, he chose to take on the enemy machines single-handedly instead of pulling back.

History

Hoping to keep a small village safe from the Simon Pirates and their leader Niphtal, Hei brought his band to town. Backed by two of his finest, he scattered the enemy's forces, only for the pirate to answer with two summoned machines. The mechanical pair, identified as Kau and Zau, flattened the entire band and left Niphtal with no one to stop him. That changed once the Straw Hats arrived, dismantled the machines, and drove the pirate off. Coming to, Hei thanked the crew and carried them across the water on Wadatsumi, his pet whale.

Reaching his island, he led the visitors to his hideout and introduced them to gang mates including Ko and Tei, then pointed them toward their friend Vivi, who was staying there. The situation soured after Din seized Vivi and Gad crippled the crew's ship, prompting Hei and his fellows to throw in with the young pirates. Once every treasure had been collected, the bandits traveled to the central island to keep Simon from rousing the Shushibaruba. The attempt failed and the beast stirred, throwing the band into panic, yet the Straw Hats held their ground and brought it down. With the danger past, the bandits gathered to bid the crew farewell.
