Appearance

Koza is a young Arabastan man marked by purple-tinted glasses and a scar over his left eye, a wound earned in boyhood fighting the bandit Agotogi. During the climactic battle for Arabasta he wore a blue scarf, a long dark purple coat reaching his ankles, a white shirt, black trousers, and a yellow sash.

Two years later he appears in Yuba grown noticeably more muscular, dressed in a short-sleeved shirt and black trousers, still wearing the tinted glasses, with desert goggles at his collar, a pistol on his belt, and gloves on his hands.

Personality

Above all, Koza loves his country, family, and friends, and he will endure almost anything to protect them. As a boy he risked his life to shield his Sand-Sand Clan, and as a man he led an army to defend his homeland. King Cobra recognized that fierce devotion in him early on and noted it had never faded. A born leader, he headed both the clan and later a rebel force of millions, commanding enough influence to march them on the palace and then to halt them with a word.

Hot-tempered and unwilling to bow to rules he deems unjust, Koza defied both his king and his own father to join the uprising, yet his motives stayed pure, aimed only at his country's prosperity. Once he uncovered the Baroque Works conspiracy, he threw himself into stopping the very war he had helped ignite.

History

Raised outside Alubarna chiefly by his father Toto, a nine-year-old Koza marched to the capital during a drought to berate King Cobra for his people's suffering. Rather than punish the boy, Cobra admired his courage and pledged relief, but Koza stormed off in tears and clashed with the young Princess Vivi. After his family resettled near Alubarna, he gathered local children into the Sand-Sand Clan and, impressed by Vivi's persistence, named her his deputy. When the bandit Agotogi tried to abduct her, Koza fought him off with a makeshift club, taking the scar over his eye.

Years later, as Crocodile secretly engineered drought and unrest across Arabasta, a disillusioned Koza joined and then led a rebel army hundreds of thousands strong, never realizing he was Crocodile's pawn. Shot by a Cobra impostor at Nanohana and again by infiltrators during a peace attempt, he pressed the assault on Alubarna until Luffy's defeat of Crocodile and a sudden rain finally ended the war. Reunited with Vivi, he pledged himself to rebuilding Yuba, and by the time of the Straw Hats' return he had risen to Environmental Minister of Arabasta.
