Mashikaku

His face carries an almost simian cast, framed by bushy brown hair and inward-curling, pointed sideburns, with tanned skin and a blocky jaw, and his closed mouth turns up at the corners. He wears the usual Marine shirt and cap, and in the manga adds epaulettes that signal his rank, an accent the anime drops. At Marineford he layered an officer's coat over the standard shirt.

Mashikaku grows visibly anxious around anyone above him in rank. He fretted over how the higher-ups might react to Smoker defying orders, and flinched when Smoker bluntly snapped that he did not care what they thought.

He first surfaces in Loguetown, bursting into Smoker's steam room to report pirate trouble in the square and then trailing his captain through town, where he handed Tashigi her jacket. When Smoker resolved to chase Luffy into the Grand Line, Mashikaku worried aloud about abandoning their post. He followed the unit to Arabasta, flagging Ace's arrival and later recognizing Nico Robin during the hostage standoff at Alubarna, and he urged in vain that they arrest the exhausted Straw Hats after Crocodile fell. Summoned to reinforce Marineford for Ace's execution, he stood with Smoker and Tashigi through Sengoku's revelations and lived to the war's end, armed at various points with a long rifle and a large sword. Whether he stayed with Smoker after the transfer to G-5 is unknown, since he never turns up among that unit.
