Dr. Nako

Slight of build and far along in years, Nako keeps grey hair set off by a pointed Van Dyke beard and mustache. The clothes he favors include tinted glasses, a bandanna, and a physician's white coat, with the headwear and the coat each marked by a red cross. Beneath them he tends to wear a top striped in light and dark green.

The version of him shown in Episode of Nami swaps the cross on his bandanna for the kanji that reads doctor. Once the two-year gap has passed, his wardrobe turns to a floral shirt and striped shorts, though the same glasses, coat, and bandanna remain.

Cold reasoning guides Nako more than feeling, and he carries himself in a blunt, no-nonsense way. Even so, real courage runs through him: aware that a clash with Arlong would almost certainly kill him, he still joined the townsfolk who chose to make a stand. When fear, surprise, or irritation takes hold, his teeth clench and his face grows hard to read.

That harsh exterior conceals a man of genuine warmth. Toward those he holds dear he proves thoughtful and kind, looking past their quirks while keeping up a gruff front.

When Bell-mère brought the two war-orphaned sisters home to Cocoyasi Village, Nako was called for at once. Despite her own wounds, she insisted he treat the gravely ill children before her. All three pulled through, and she resolved to raise the pair, which troubled Nako, Genzo, and the village elders. A decade afterward the Arlong Pirates seized the Conomi Islands and demanded tribute from every resident. Knowing Bell-mère lacked the funds for three, Nako tried to send the girls off to sea before Arlong spotted them, but she would not deny her daughters and gave her life instead.

After Arlong hauled Nami away to draw maps and stranded the islands by wrecking every boat, Nako patched up the beaten villagers and joined Genzo in weighing open revolt against quiet hope of Marine rescue. The village chose to fight, only for Nami to return claiming she had enlisted under Arlong; the truth of her secret bargain to free the islands turned their fury into hidden support. Eight years on, Marine Captain Nezumi stole the fortune she had nearly amassed, and Nako and Genzo led an open uprising, charging the park even as Nami tried to halt them at knifepoint.

There they found the Straw Hats already battling Arlong's crew, and Luffy brought down both the captain and his whole stronghold. In the aftermath Nako treated the wounded, mending Zoro's gash from Mihawk and chiding the crew for having no doctor, which planted the idea in Luffy's head. A capable tattooist as well, he hid her shoulder scar beneath a design that blends a tangerine with a pinwheel, honoring Bell-mère and Genzo, and showed Genzo its meaning as she sailed away. Years later, when Vegapunk's worldwide broadcast reached the islands, Nako listened along with everyone else.
