Bell-mère

Standing unusually tall at 186 cm, Bell-mère cut a slim figure crowned by a striking Chelsea-hawk crop, a mohawk-like style Oda nicknamed in jest. Her fuchsia hair was gathered into a ponytail above grey eyes, and a cigarette was almost always present.

For everyday farm life she favored a green checkered shirt marked MACE, indigo trousers, and brown sandals. Her earlier Marine days saw her in the standard uniform, the officer's coat slung across her shoulders like a cape.

A notorious hellraiser in her youth, Bell-mère unsettled her whole village when she enlisted, yet everyone still fretted over her safety. That same reputation made the locals doubt she could raise children, so she set out to prove she had matured into someone responsible. Flashes of her old mischief lingered, such as her teasing offers to repay Genzo for Nami's thefts, a habit Nami clearly inherited.

In uniform she was bold and dependable, vowing to take down Shiki herself if he threatened the East Blue. A brutal campaign in the Oykot Kingdom left her hollowed out and ready to give up, until the two girls gave her a reason to keep living. Devoted as she was, she could act on impulse, once striking Nami over a hurtful remark, and she freely admitted Nojiko carried herself more maturely than she ever had.

Wounded and starving amid the ruins of a war-torn town, Bell-mère had resigned herself to dying when a toddler Nojiko stumbled in carrying the infant Nami. The baby's oblivious smile pulled her back from the edge, and she brought both children home, insisting they be treated before she was and refusing to register them for adoption so she could raise them herself.

Money was always scarce. She poured everything into the girls, quietly surviving on the mikans she grew and lying about being on a diet to hide the hardship. She championed Nami's dream of mapping the world and urged both daughters to grow strong. A bitter argument over hand-me-down clothes once drove her to slap Nami, after which she resolved to scrape together coins for Nami's favorite meal.

That very day Arlong's crew reached her home. She pinned the fish-man with her rifle and revealed her Marine past, but his strength shattered the weapon. When Arlong demanded tribute, she could only afford to cover her two children, declaring she would rather die than deny being their mother. Arlong shot her before their eyes, but not before she told them she loved them. Her grave, first a crude wooden cross and later a proper headstone, became a place the village returned to, and her words about happy times to come drove Nami forward long after her death.
