An intensely competitive streak defines Masaru, fueled above all by his enduring rivalry with Yuki. He throws himself into that contest with total dedication, even putting his body through punishing training to get ahead, and he approaches Miracle Battle Carddass with complete seriousness.
From infancy onward, Masaru has measured himself against Akagami Yuki in everything, however trivial. As babies the two raced on hands and knees; as toddlers they competed to finish their milk first and even over who wet more during the night. In time their contest settled mainly into card duels.
During the events of MiraBato GO!, Masaru lost yet another duel to Yuki and spent the following week hidden in the mountains, hardening his body and studying his cards. He modeled the regimen on the Greed Island training undertaken by Gon and Killua of Hunter x Hunter and on the tree-climbing exercise from Naruto. Even so, when the pair next dueled over leftover pudding, his new rival-themed deck and all his effort still ended in defeat.
