Appearance

Zunesha is an elephant of island-rivaling scale. Its two-jointed legs stretch to absurd lengths, letting it stride across the sea floor while keeping its body and roughly the upper third of each leg above the surface. By contrast its eyes are tiny, set deep in their sockets, showing ringed turquoise irises in the anime, so faint that the creature often seems to have none at all. Centuries of life show in its deeply creased gray hide and its ragged, frayed ears.

The design draws on Salvador Dalí's painting The Elephants, echoing its towering legs and the structures riding on its back. The species name read in reverse translates to an elephant resembling Dalí's work, and the kanji of its name means 'elephant lord.'

Personality

Most of what drives Zunesha remains hidden, yet it plainly holds deep affection for the Mink Tribe and feels no burden in carrying their whole civilization. The terms of its ancient sentence forbid it from acting on its own, so it may defend itself only with the consent of someone able to understand it, and Miyagi suspects it walks toward a particular destination rather than wandering at random. It speaks of Joy Boy with nostalgia, recognizing the Drums of Liberation even eight centuries on, and it came to place its trust in the awakened Luffy as the heir to that ancient figure.

History

Born a millennium ago in the New World, Zunesha possesses immense longevity, the strength to bear Zou ceaselessly across the ages, and the Voice of All Things, which lets it speak telepathically with others who share the gift. Its trunk draws in and blasts out huge volumes of seawater and fish, and a single sweep of it can wipe out whole fleets or bring down Jack himself, a Beasts Pirates All-Star, with one blow; its eyesight is sharp enough to pick out faraway detail, though its aged skin tears under concentrated cannon fire. At some point it became one of Joy Boy's companions, and eight hundred years ago it committed an unspecified crime and was condemned to walk the seas forever, acting only on command. Seventeen days before the Straw Hats reached Zou, Jack invaded with the Beasts Pirates, and the elephant roared in pain at the intruder's presence.

When Jack returned bent on killing it to wipe out the minks, his fleet shredded one of its legs. Zunesha pleaded with Kouzuki Momonosuke for leave to retaliate, and once Momonosuke understood its past and gave the order, a single trunk swing annihilated the fleet before the elephant resumed its march. Chopper and Miyagi later tended its wounded leg alongside grateful minks.

Zunesha later arrived in the waters off Wano Country amid a fleet of World Government ships, declaring, by way of the Voice of All Things, its intent to fight under Momonosuke and open Wano's borders. It heard the Drums of Liberation heralding Joy Boy's return and recognized the same presence in the awakened Luffy. After Kaidou's defeat, Momonosuke chose to keep the borders closed for now, and out of respect for that judgment Zunesha departed and faded into the surrounding mist. During the Egghead Arc it listened in on Vegapunk's worldwide broadcast.
