Chapter 286: The Monster of Shandora

With Skypiea collapsing under Enel's bolts, the inhabitants of Angel Island scramble toward the sea, and even the toll-keeper at Heaven's Gate keeps demanding her exit fee while everyone around her flees. Luffy keeps hauling himself up the towering beanstalk to reach Enel, with Conis, Su, and a recovering Nami all left at its base. Telling the others to bolt for the Going Merry, Nami takes the Waver and races up the stalk to back her captain.

Wyper refuses to retreat, transfixed by the wreckage of his homeland. His mind drifts to a story his chief once told him, one explaining why his ancestor Kalgara fought to retake their land and sound the great bell: he did it for a friend, the foreigner Mont Blanc Noland. The chapter then drops 400 years into Jaya's past, where the man feared as Shandora's demon, Kalgara, dismantles an intruding exploration party single-handed.

In the flashback, a frightened crew tries to set sail without all its members, but Kalgara hurls a chained iron ball that cripples the escaping vessel. He overpowers the survivors, warns them to stay still if they value their lives, torches the ruined hull, and sends them off in lifeboats stripped of their stores. Far out on the Grand Line, a second battered crew despairs as their leader strips, folds his clothes, and dives overboard, leading them to assume he has drowned himself in surrender. He surfaces hauling a slain Sea King he killed to feed them, and the man is revealed as Noland himself, grumbling about his crew's weakness.

This chapter brings both Kalgara and Mont Blanc Noland onstage in person for the first time, and underlines Noland's strength by showing him drown a Sea King barehanded for food. The cover continues the Ace's Great Blackbeard Search serial, where Ace blows his own cover the instant a Marine mocks Whitebeard. The pages were adapted across Episode 186 and Episode 187.
