Summary

Trapped into honoring the contest by Foxy, who names Porche as a witness, Luffy finds the challenge impossible to withdraw. Usopp argues against it, yet Luffy refuses to be branded less than a man and only raises what happened to Shelly. When Tonjit moves to fire back in revenge, Luffy frantically holds him off while Chopper is still digging the bullet out of the horse. Across the field, the remaining Straw Hats hear the proposal from Foxy's crew. To Zoro, any formal challenge wastes time since a brawl would happen anyway, but Sanji corrects him: the affair is closer to a gamble than a fight.

Key Events

Robin clarifies that the game was invented so pirates could strip crew members away from one another. The format runs three rounds; whoever takes a round claims someone from the defeated crew, that recruit then swearing allegiance to the winning captain, though the victor may instead seize the loser's flag. Nami calls the whole thing meaningless and refuses to play, only to be told the crew's wishes count for nothing once the captain consents. The fired starting guns confirm the match is on. Foxy opens the contest by flinging a coin into the sea for Davy Jones, prompting Robin to recount the legend of the cursed pirate who claims everything sinking to the ocean floor. Roster assignments follow before the first round commences.

Notes

The Davy Back Fight gets described as a crew-stealing tournament of three rounds, and Luffy accepts the challenge that Foxy laid down. Kibagaeru, who once captained the Fanged Toad Pirates, turns up among Foxy's ranks beside his old navigator, doctor, and carpenter. For the Groggy Ring the crew fields Chopper alongside Zoro and Sanji; the opening Donut Race goes to Nami, Robin, and Usopp; and the final Combat round falls to Luffy alone. Both sides then prepare for that first race. The cover is an Animal Theater where Usopp fits clips and a wooden frame onto the rubbery Luffy, turning him into a makeshift glider that soars beside flying squirrels. The chapter sits within the Long Ring Long Land Arc.
