The events that set up the ambush are recounted from a few hours earlier. Luffy had pitched the notion of concealing a mirror inside the towering dessert, an idea that left Bege startled and Brûlée loudly resistant. Knowing her ability could mold ordinary beasts into lookalikes of any individual, a point Chopper backs up, Luffy rounds up several animals and compels her to remold them into versions of himself.

At the ceremony the cake splits and the duplicates scatter, sending guests fleeing as the collapsing structure leans toward them. Sanji springs to safety with Pudding in hand, leaving the rest of the plan in Luffy's care. The destruction of the dessert she had craved tips Big Mom into a breakdown; demanding a replacement, she drains the lives from several of her cooks when none appears. Faced with a crowd of identical Luffys, the Emperor cannot say which is real, and only when the genuine one steps out does she fix on him, just as he sets his aim on the portrait of Mother Carmel.

The moment Luffy lunges at the picture, a coiling mass of adhesive erupts from Katakuri's leg and binds his limbs. Katakuri has singled out the real intruder and grasps that only people near the household would understand what the portrait means to her. A torrent of water from Jinbe loosens the grip and tears Luffy free, after which the fish-man cautions him that the substance comes from the Mochi Mochi no Mi, a fruit ranked as a special Paramecia. Claiming for himself the act of exposing Carmel's value, Jinbe states that he is abandoning the crew to stand with the Straw Hats.

The Emperor will let him go only if she may claim his lifespan, terms he embraces provided his allies remain untouched. To her astonishment his spirit refuses to leave his flesh, for he holds no dread of her and swears he will never flinch before an Emperor while pledging himself to the man destined to be Pirate King.

This installment spells out how Luffy's group breached the venue and confirms that the Emperor's lifespan-draining power bites only into those who dread her. Luffy stands before the Yonko in the flesh for the very first time, and her crew comes to understand that Opera had lied to them. The magazine printing tagged Katakuri's fruit as a Logia, a label revised to a special Paramecia in the collected volume, and his use of Armament Haki is recorded. Disguised as Luffy, Brook reaches the portrait and breaks it apart with a hammer to end the chapter.
