Arlong rages at Luffy for shielding himself with a crewmate, and Luffy throws the hypocrisy back at him. The fish-man snaps at him with handfuls of teeth, but Luffy ducks the lunges and kicks loose another row from his jaw. Rather than keep breaking the regrowing teeth, Luffy stuffs a set into his own mouth, baffling Johnny and Yosaku, who think he is clowning around. After taking a bite to the shoulder, Luffy sinks Arlong's own teeth into the fish-man, only for Arlong to dismiss the weak human jaw.

Arlong demonstrates real shark strength by clamping onto Luffy's arm at the elbow, and Luffy escapes only by slamming him into the ground to loosen the grip, narrowly avoiding losing the limb as Genzo notes. Arlong then vanishes into the pool, where he claims unmatched speed, rocketing out like a torpedo. Luffy barely dodges the first strike, which buries Arlong's nose harmlessly in the earth, and survives repeated passes that graze him.

Luffy's plan to beat Arlong with the fish-man's teeth proves largely ineffective. Arlong unveils a new underwater charging technique, using his nose like a weapon to overwhelm his opponent. Battered but undeterred, Luffy plants himself before the pool and swears that he will catch Arlong and break that nose. The cover continues the Diary of Koby-Meppo, where Helmeppo's distant sighting turns out to be Vice Admiral Garp's approaching Marine ship.
