Chapter 170 (Online): What Was Gained

At the police station, Garou brushes off questions about his crimes and lectures on his beliefs instead, which earns him a knock from Bang. Outside, Bang insists he apologize to the people he hunted, but Garou only tags along in hopes of recovering his fighting style with the old man's help. The two then stroll and talk casually.

Meanwhile, Sitch weighs Bang's resignation and his intention to introduce a certain person into the Hero Association as a replacement. Aware the heroes will reject Garou, Sitch accepts the risk, since readying for Shibabawa's final prophecy takes priority.

An officer asks Garou whether he regrets dining and dashing at a restaurant, and when Garou deflects, Bang strikes him from behind. On the walk afterward, Garou explains he wants to spar again with the heroes he once fought as a monster, Bang included, believing such rematches could bring him an awakening without monsterizing.

In a park playground, Tareo plays a heroes-versus-villains game with friends until Waganma arrives by car with his father Narinki and joins in. At Hero Association Headquarters, Sitch discusses Bang's departure with Sekingar, who does not realize the recruit Sitch means is Garou.

As the two continue their walk, Bang asks Garou what kind of girl he likes, and Garou names Kiiro, an actress from a sentai show, sparking a chat about the current state of such programs. In the drained seabed left by the Monster Association incident, Saitama and Genos dig for the remains of their apartment while a shrunken Overgrown Rover watches from the shore.

Released online on August 18, 2022, the chapter uses the online title What Was Gained, which Viz Media prints as Gains. It belongs to the Monster Association Arc and has no direct webcomic source. Its release date coincided with the announcement of the anime's third season. Saitama, Genos, Garou, Bang, Tatsumaki, and Fubuki appear on the cover.
