Grandpa Loses Control: Rei in Danger

Rei's grandfather is stargazing on the shrine roof when Zoisite arrives to pull a Rainbow Crystal from him. Caught off guard, the old priest fires back and sends the general tumbling off the roof into a flock of crows, and Zoisite slips away before Rei can investigate. Down on the shrine steps, a hungover stranger wakes to a scowling Rei and calls himself Yuichiro Kumada, begging to train under her grandfather after falling for her on the spot.

Soon Rei complains that her grandfather is behaving oddly, putting Yuichiro through absurd drills like dangling from tree branches. When Usagi decides to nudge Rei and Yuichiro toward romance, she disguises herself as a fortune teller and claims a kiss will make the pair fall in love. Rei erupts, snaps that she already has Mamoru, and coldly declares that she and Usagi are no longer friends, reducing her to tears even though she does not truly mean it.

That night Zoisite returns and strikes the grandfather down, using the Black Crystal to draw out his Rainbow Crystal. Tuxedo Mask knocks the gem loose, but Zoisite transforms the old man into the youma Jiji before escaping with the crystal into the woods. Yuichiro throws himself between Rei and the monster, is swatted aside, and Rei realizes with horror that the creature is her own grandfather. She refuses to run even as it seizes her by the throat.

Usagi arrives, becomes Sailor Moon, and hesitates once Rei reveals the monster's identity. On Luna's advice, Rei pins the youma in place with a spirit ward, letting Sailor Moon cast Moon Healing Escalation and return her grandfather to normal. With the danger past, the group shares sweet daifuku, and a grateful Rei kisses Yuichiro for his bravery, prompting her grandfather to chase him off in mock outrage as she and Usagi patch things up.

The episode introduces Yuichiro Kumada and marks the first of two times he shields Rei from a monster. Although the story centers on Rei, she never transforms or fights, seemingly unwilling to raise a hand against her own grandfather. Grandpa Hino is notable as the only one among the Seven Great Youma able to resist his transformation at first and even to keep struggling after being weakened. The DiC dub softened the material, renaming the daifuku as chocolate cakes and cutting the scene of the monster strangling Rei, and the installment was skipped entirely in the Korean broadcast.
