The 31st episode of the first season gives Luna a hapless suitor in a heavyset blue tomcat named Rhett Butler, whose little owner and pet both become the prize as the Guardians and Zoisite race one another to claim the final Rainbow Crystal.
Summary
Cornered by a swarm of neighborhood cats, Luna is rescued when a large blue tomcat scatters them and, to her shock, begins doting on her. The cat answers to the name Rhett Butler and belongs to a little girl. Zoisite, meanwhile, traces the seventh Rainbow Crystal to that same household and sets out to claim it.
Key Events
Ami's pocket computer narrows the crystal's location while the Moon Stick sits unresponsive. Following the data, Usagi, Ami, Makoto and Luna reach the girl's home, where Luna is again mobbed by strays. When the girl's cat bolts, she chases it into an alley and is ambushed by Zoisite, who uses the Dark Crystal on her without result and concludes the crystal lies within Rhett Butler instead. Trying to reach the girl through the narrow alley, the transformed Guardians jam themselves comically together and fail to help.
Rhett Butler saves Luna from an attacking cat but tumbles with her into a manhole, and the two wander the sewers as Zoisite pursues, harried by a flood of mice. Above ground Rei, distracted by thoughts of Mamoru, brushes off Yuuichirou and later mistakes Luna and Rhett Butler for a courting pair. When Zoisite finally corners the cats, Rei transforms into Sailor Mars to shield the supposed lovers, but Zoisite seizes the Rainbow Crystal and turns Rhett Butler into the youma Bakene. Tuxedo Mask knocks the crystal away and escapes with it.
The gentle youma simply wanders toward the city and even catches Luna when she slips. Sailor Mercury's Shabon Spray disorients it, Sailor Jupiter snatches Luna to safety, and Sailor Moon restores Rhett Butler with Moon Healing Escalation. Once the cat has gone home, Rei teases Luna about parting from her feline sweetheart, a suggestion Luna flatly denies.

Kunihiko Ikuhara directed the episode from a script by Katsuyuki Sumizawa, and it first aired in Japan on November 7, 1992. The DiC dub, titled Kitty Chaos, reached North America on October 17, 1995, where Rhett Butler was renamed Hercules. This is the first episode to poke fun at Tuxedo Mask, here through Rhett Butler's fishbone-tossing rescue, and Rhett Butler is the only one of the Seven Great Youma whose true form is an animal.
