Learn How to Be Skinny from Usagi

Alarmed to discover a bit of extra weight after a bath, Usagi resolves to trim down quickly. She and her classmates sign up at a newly opened fitness club that boasts of instant results, unaware that the whole operation is a trap.

After her family gently blames her appetite, Usagi endures a hungry school day, eyeing Naru's lunch and turning down Umino's leftovers. Talk among the girls about dieting turns to how trim their teacher Ms. Haruna looks lately, and Umino produces secret photos of Haruna exercising, which leads the group to the gym called Shapelin. Jadeite, posing as an instructor named Jed, watches them arrive and lures the girls into capsules he calls the Shape-Ray.

In the basement the pods quietly siphon the girls' energy for Queen Beryl. Usagi, who wandered off, faints at the Game Center from her crash diet and is comforted by Motoki, who admits he prefers girls who are not overly thin. Luna scolds Usagi for taking that remark too far and points out that Haruna and other Shapelin customers are wasting away. Returning to the gym, Luna confirms the Dark Kingdom is behind the pods and pushes Usagi to act.

Usagi transforms into Sailor Moon to stop Jadeite, who sets three mind-controlled bodybuilders on her. She frees the men by destroying the rings on their heads with Moon Tiara Action. Afterward Usagi weighs herself again and finds, to her dismay, that she has gained even more.

Harume Kosaka directed the episode from a script by Sukehiro Tomita, and it first aired in Japan on March 28, 1992. The DiC dub, titled Slim City, aired in Canada on August 30, 1995 and across North America on September 13, 1995. The chapter is anime-original with no manga source, and it stands out as one of the few times Jadeite succeeds at draining energy without a youma. Concern over its body-image themes drew a British age rating of 15, unusual for the first season, and the dub added a cautionary Sailor Moon Says segment about dieting.
