Appearance

Roughly tripling the bulk of a full-grown man, Ammut is a slab of reptilian muscle topped by a crocodile's head. His skin folds in deep wrinkles, his black claws stretch long, and a pronounced hunch shapes his gait. When first seen, he wore ragged greenish-gray trousers under a torn gray hood, his eyes bound with bandages.

Personality

Fighting is what stirs him. Prideful and aggressive, Ammut spares little regard for anyone too feeble to impress or properly test him, and slaughters such foes without mercy. There is one exception, namely those who speak the monster tongue, whom he keeps alive long enough for a real conversation, exactly as he did in promising to spare Suho on the condition that every question about the Monarchs' war be answered. The torment he endured under Tarnak left him hating goblins and hungering for freedom, and under all the savagery sits a streak that comes off as childlike.

History

His origin splits between the two adaptations. The web novel makes Ammut the mentor who schooled Tarnak in every technique until the pupil grew mighty enough to seize the Iron Body Monarch's title; even so, Ammut kept clear of the Rulers-versus-Monarchs war and only watched it from the edges. Unsure whether his teaching or Tarnak's own talent had driven that ascent, he tried raising other goblins the same way, but his methods killed them all, leaving him doubting his worth as a teacher while old age set in. Seeking immortality, he made a pact with Kandiaru and let himself be locked inside a giant pyramid for centuries. The webtoon instead casts him as an alligator-like demon abducted and tortured by Tarnak and Kandiaru together, repeatedly broken and healed until he tore out both of his eyes and grew to savor pain; cast off by his makers and caged for unstated reasons, he built up a vast grudge.

The Pyramid Arc liberates him in either telling. When the Apostles reached the human world, his prison rose up in Egypt, taking the form of a field-type dungeon and luring greedy guilds like Scavenger and Asura toward its treasure. Scavenger hunters who reached his chamber unleashed him; he ripped free of his chains and butchered the room, sparing only Randolph, whose war hammer could not so much as budge him before Ammut drove a fist clean through the man. Outside, he stumbled on Esil Radiru and Suho and was startled that both could speak the monster tongue. Vowing to spare them while his questions stood answered, he asked whether the Monarchs' war had ended and who had triumphed, and bristled at Esil's silence. Suho, restoring himself with Status Recovery, revealed that the Shadow Monarch had ended it all alone, which meant Tarnak too had perished. Confirming it, Ammut laughed cruelly and thanked the Shadow Monarch for slaying his old associate while he sat imprisoned.

An accidental step past the pyramid's edge yanked him back into bondage, but Suho followed and offered to free him by killing the dungeon boss, provided Ammut honor one request. Thrilled, he agreed. With the boss slain and the structure crumbling, Tarnak's failsafe weights assailed the freed chains, so Suho and Esil fended them off long enough for a Shadow Dungeon Gate to open, where Ammut was pushed through and at last found the peace he had wanted. Afterward he slaughtered all the forest's goblins to purge his loathing of the Tarnak association, insisting no promise had been broken, and turned to training Suho instead, marching the young Hunter through a grueling routine of carrying him while doing a hundred push-ups, a hundred sit-ups, a hundred squats, and a ten kilometer run. Praising Suho for completing it, he named the youth the strongest human he had ever faced. In time he rose to reign over every monstrous humanoid, their new king crowned the Monarch of Trials.
