Personality

Bruce came up in the first chaotic years after Quirks appeared, and surviving a society coming apart made a hardened veteran of him. He shares Kudo's grim bearing and a certain detachment earned in that era. The world resolved for him into two outcomes with nothing between them, victory meaning life and defeat meaning death.

All For One's strength and the reach of his influence were what drove Bruce into Kudo's resistance and its single aim of bringing the man down. His sense of justice runs strong enough that he initially refused Izuku Midoriya any help, put off by the boy's optimism and by ambitions he considered ridiculous, chief among them saving Tomura Shigaraki. In his reading, Izuku had no grasp of what One For All was for or of what ending the war with All For One would demand.

He is not without warmth. He agreed to help pull Yoichi Shigaraki, the younger brother of his sworn enemy, out of captivity, and supported him afterward. Yoichi eventually talked him around on Izuku, and once persuaded, Bruce took to teaching, walking the boy through how to handle Fa Jin. His loyalty to Kudo held to the end, since Kudo trusted him as his second and passed One For All to him, and both men died for the cause.

History

Fa Jin was his own Meta Ability. Repetitive motion let him bank kinetic energy inside his body and hold it there, then spend the lot at once as a violent surge of speed and force. One For All came to him from Kudo, and it piled up raw power without apparent limit, lifting his strength, speed, agility and toughness to superhuman levels.

The name One For All was his doing. He worked out what the Quirk actually was, saw that it only showed its worth across the long term, and christened it sarcastically on that basis. Supplementary material fills in the rest of his life. He worked as a researcher before joining the resistance, and rumors of Hikage Shinomori later led him to pass the Quirk along. Afterward he gathered the few survivors of Kudo's organization, crossed overseas to draw All For One away, and died in his homeland. He is the only wielder of One For All with no stated or implied birth in Japan.

His name nods to the martial artist Bruce Lee, who built his famous one-inch punch on the principle of fa jin. Read together, his given name and surname also contain the katakana for the English word three, matching his place in the One For All line, a naming joke the other wielders share.
