What Dragon Ball Super: Beerus Actually Is

Toei announced Dragon Ball Super: Beerus in January 2026, and a good chunk of the fanbase heard the phrase new Dragon Ball Super anime and stopped reading right there. The reality is calmer than the group chats made it sound. Beerus is a top to bottom remake of the Dragon Ball Super you have already seen, not a continuation of it.

That difference is the entire story, so it is worth pinning down before the hype pins down something wrong.

An enhanced edition, not a new story

The official description does not leave much room to read between the lines. Beerus is built from extensive new cuts, revised scenes, a complete re-rendering of every shot, freshly recorded voice work, and a reworked score and sound design. Toei called it a full reconstruction of the story. What it is not is a single frame of new plot. If you have seen Dragon Ball Super, you already know exactly where this goes.

It starts where Super started

The title is a tell. This run covers the God of Destruction Beerus saga, the arc that opened Dragon Ball Super back in 2015. Beerus, the God of Destruction of Universe 7, wakes from a long nap, hears that some Saiyan beat Frieza, and goes looking for Goku and the Super Saiyan God from his dream. It is the Battle of Gods material, redrawn so it sits next to the modern movies instead of looking like their decade older sibling.

No, It Is Not a Movie, and No, It Is Not Season 2

The two questions people actually type into the search bar are whether Beerus is a movie and whether it is the second season they have been promised for years. Both answers are a little deflating, which is why nobody volunteers them.

It is a television series

Beerus is a TV anime, full stop. The mix-up is fair. The Beerus arc has already been told twice, once as the 2013 Battle of Gods film and once as the opening of the Super series, so Beerus plus theatrical looking animation reads as a movie to a lot of people. It is not a movie. It airs as a series.

The real continuation has a different name

Here is the part that got lost in the noise. Toei announced two projects at the same event. Beerus is the remaster. The actual new story is a separate series, Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, which picks up after the Universe Survival arc and the Tournament of Power. That is the one carrying the plot forward. Fans mashed the two announcements together and decided a true Season 2 had finally arrived. Half of that is right. The new content half is just wearing a different name.

When It Premieres, and Whether It Is Worth It

Release first, since that is the other thing the search bar will not stop asking.

Fall 2026, Japan first

Beerus premieres in fall 2026 in Japan. Toei made the announcement on January 25, 2026, and has held the window at fall without committing to a calendar date. A simultaneous Western release has not been confirmed, so the safe read is Japan first and the rest of the world after.

The honest verdict

A glossy remake of a story you have already watched is a strange thing to feel hyped about, and Beerus is not pretending to be anything else. The pitch is plain: the saga that launched Super, rebuilt to look like it belongs in 2026. If the original animation always nagged at you, this is the patch. If you heard new Dragon Ball Super and hoped it meant new Dragon Ball Super, the thing you actually want is Galactic Patrol, and that is the one worth circling on the calendar. Beerus is the warm up lap, and it is going to be a very good looking one.
