Goku's story begins when he is discovered as a baby by the elderly martial artist Gohan in a remote mountain region. After his grandfather's death, Goku lives alone until a chance encounter with Bulma sends him on a quest for the Dragon Balls. This journey introduces him to lifelong allies like Krillin, Yamcha, and Master Roshi, whose Turtle School training shapes Goku into a formidable martial artist.

The Saiyan Heritage

The arrival of Raditz shatters Goku's understanding of himself, revealing his true identity as a Saiyan warrior named Kakarot. This revelation sets the stage for the Saiyan invasion, during which Goku sacrifices his life to defeat Raditz and later pushes past his limits on King Kai's planet to prepare for Vegeta and Nappa. His battles on Planet Namek against the Ginyu Force and Frieza mark a turning point: witnessing Krillin's death triggers Goku's first transformation into a Super Saiyan, fulfilling an ancient legend.

From Cell to Buu

During the Android and Cell sagas, Goku makes a pivotal decision to step aside and entrust the fate of the world to his son Gohan, recognizing Gohan's hidden potential. He sacrifices himself again by teleporting the self-destructing Cell away from Earth. Returning to life years later for the World Tournament, Goku confronts the Majin Buu threat, achieving Super Saiyan 3 and ultimately rallying the entire Earth to contribute energy for a Spirit Bomb that destroys Kid Buu.

The Super Era and Beyond

In Dragon Ball Super, Goku encounters divine warriors like Beerus the God of Destruction and his attendant Whis. Through their guidance, he attains Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue. The Tournament of Power, a multiverse survival competition, pushes Goku to unlock Ultra Instinct, a technique that even the gods struggle to master. He continues training alongside Vegeta under Whis, always searching for the next great challenge.

Goku's signature technique is the Kamehameha, a concentrated energy wave learned from Master Roshi. Over the decades he has refined it into numerous variations, including the Instant Kamehameha and the God Kamehameha. His Instant Transmission, learned on Planet Yardrat, allows him to teleport anywhere by locking onto a ki signature, making him extraordinarily mobile in combat.

The Spirit Bomb draws energy from all living things in the surrounding environment and compresses it into a devastating sphere. Goku has used this technique to finish several of his most dangerous opponents, including Frieza and Kid Buu. His martial arts foundation blends Turtle School fundamentals with techniques absorbed from every opponent and mentor he has encountered.

Goku's transformation chain is among the most extensive of any Saiyan. Beginning with the original Super Saiyan form, he progressed through Super Saiyan 2 and 3, then leaped to the divine tier with Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue. Ultra Instinct represents a fundamentally different category of power, separating the consciousness from the body so that it reacts and attacks on pure reflex without deliberate thought.
