Beerus is the God of Destruction for Universe 7, tasked with maintaining cosmic balance by destroying planets and civilizations to allow new creation. Feared across the cosmos, he is served by his attendant and martial arts teacher, the Angel Whis, and resides on his own planet far removed from mortal affairs.
Beerus had slumbered for 39 years when a prophetic dream stirred him awake: a vision of a warrior called the Super Saiyan God. This figure, the Oracle Fish confirmed, would appear as a worthy opponent, something Beerus had sought for eons. His search brought him first to King Kai's planet, where he easily swatted aside Goku despite the Saiyan's considerable power. From there, he traveled to Earth, arriving in the middle of Bulma's birthday celebration. After sampling the food and growing irritated by Majin Buu's refusal to share his pudding, Beerus threatened to destroy the planet. The gathered Z Fighters attempted to stop him, but even their combined efforts amounted to nothing against his divine power. Vegeta, whose father had once been humiliated by Beerus, flew into a rage but was still outclassed.
Goku learned of the Super Saiyan God transformation through Shenron, who revealed it required five righteous Saiyans channeling their energy into a sixth. With Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, Trunks, and the unborn Pan serving as conduits, Goku achieved the form and engaged Beerus in a battle that spanned from Earth's surface to the edge of the atmosphere and into space. Their clash generated shockwaves that threatened to tear apart the entire universe. Though Goku ultimately could not sustain the form long enough to win, his fighting spirit impressed Beerus enough to spare Earth. This encounter reignited the Destroyer's interest in mortal warriors, particularly the Saiyans, and he began spending more time on Earth, developing a genuine fondness for its cuisine.
As the God of Destruction, Beerus holds one of the most important positions in the cosmic hierarchy. He exists in a linked pair with the Supreme Kai of Universe 7; if one dies, the other perishes as well, a fact that makes his life cosmically significant. His twin brother Champa serves as the God of Destruction for Universe 6, and their sibling rivalry has shaped the fates of both universes. Beerus organized the Universe 6 vs. Universe 7 tournament partly to settle a petty food dispute with Champa, using the Super Dragon Balls as the prize. During the Tournament of Power, Beerus was forced to entrust Universe 7's survival to mortal fighters, an uncomfortable position for a god accustomed to absolute control.
Despite his destructive mandate, Beerus has formed surprisingly genuine connections with several mortals. His relationship with Goku is defined by competitive respect; he recognizes the Saiyan's limitless potential while remaining confident in his own superiority. Vegeta, who witnessed Beerus humiliate his father as a child, carries a deep and complicated deference toward the Destroyer that slowly evolved into something closer to mutual respect. Bulma's fearless attitude toward him, combined with her exceptional cooking, earned her a unique place in his esteem. Whis, his attendant and teacher, has trained both Goku and Vegeta with Beerus's grudging approval, and the Destroyer occasionally reveals a mentor-like quality beneath his petulant exterior.
Beerus wields Hakai, the power of Destruction itself, which allows him to erase anything from existence, including souls, matter, and even energy attacks. This technique is the hallmark of all Gods of Destruction and represents a fundamental force of the universe. Beyond Hakai, Beerus possesses speed and strength that dwarf virtually every mortal fighter, and he has demonstrated the ability to neutralize planet-destroying attacks with casual effort. During his fight with Goku, he showed that even at a fraction of his full power, he could match the Super Saiyan God transformation blow for blow.
Beerus has shown glimpses of Ultra Instinct, the autonomous combat doctrine that allows a fighter's body to react perfectly without conscious thought. While he has not fully mastered this technique, the fact that a Destroyer can access it at all speaks to his martial arts prowess, honed over millions of years. His fighting style blends overwhelming physical force with precise pressure point strikes, and he can seal the ki of other fighters to prevent them from powering up. Despite rarely taking battles seriously, the moments when Beerus fights at even moderate intensity reveal a warrior whose experience and raw power place him among the strongest beings in the entire multiverse.
