Dark hair combed back from his forehead and a slightly upturned nose gave Marcel an open, approachable face. For the trek from Liberio toward distant Wall Maria, he traveled in a long coat with a supply pack slung over his shoulders.

His Titan stood roughly five meters and previewed the form his brother would one day pilot: a small, nimble body, hollowed eye sockets, and a thick black beard on the chin. Marcel's version set itself apart with a long black mane and a lipless mouth that left rows of sharp teeth permanently exposed. That jaw could crush cannons outright, and the compact frame moved with exceptional speed and agility, backed by the regeneration common to every Titan inheritor.

Porco remembers his older brother as strong and dependable, and everything shown of Marcel supports it. Encouragement came naturally to him; he lifted up struggling comrades, Reiner especially, and stepped between Porco and Reiner whenever their rivalry boiled over. Where the other candidates chased the Nine Titans as badges of pride, Marcel read the same inheritance as a tragedy, and he schemed to spare his brother from it. His selflessness was literal: given a heartbeat to choose between his own life and Reiner's, he shoved his friend out of the way.

An Eldian raised in Marley, Marcel entered Warrior training alongside Porco at their parents' urging and excelled, standing out whenever strength and endurance were tested, until he ranked among the seven finalists for the power of the Titans. Fearing what inheritance would cost his brother, he quietly inflated Reiner's standing with the Marleyan command while undercutting Porco's. The maneuver worked: in 843 Reiner received the Armored Titan, Porco was passed over, and Marcel himself took the Jaw. After the six new Warriors proved themselves devastating in war, Marley launched the Paradis Island Operation to seize the Founding Titan, sending Marcel across the sea in 845 alongside Reiner, Annie Leonhart, and Bertolt Hoover, with Commander Magath wishing them success and a safe return.

Camped at dawn on the island, Marcel confessed the truth to Reiner: he was never supposed to be chosen, and Marcel had rigged the outcome to protect Porco. Before the conversation could finish, a Pure Titan erupted from the soil. Marcel knocked Reiner aside and was eaten alive while the others fled. His devourer regained human form as Ymir, unknowingly carrying his power for the next five years.

The consequences ripple across the whole story. Reiner grafted Marcel's warmth onto his own soldier persona during his years undercover, a theft that later enrages Porco, who inherits the Jaw in the Marley arc but can access only Ymir's memories, not his brother's. During the War for Paradis, Reiner accidentally unlocks the memory of Marcel's confession while trying to rouse an unconscious Porco. When Ymir Fritz raises the past inheritors to defend Eren Yeager during the Rumbling, Zeke reawakens Marcel's mind in the Paths world, and the brothers fight side by side at last, saving Jean Kirstein and Pieck Finger and pressing on until Eren's nape is destroyed.
