Eighth Division

Character

The Eighth Division, or Squad 8, is one of the thirteen court guard companies that make up the Gotei 13. Long shaped by the easy charm of its former captain Shunsui Kyōraku, the pleasure-loving unit now answers to Captain Lisa Yadomaru.

Appearance

The division marks itself with the Bird of Paradise flower, or Strelitzia, and carries the motto 'Everything is Obtained,' its assigned color a deep Raspberry Rose. Its barracks, like those of every company, hold the working offices and sleeping quarters of the division's Shinigami. Part of that compound was wrecked when Yasutora Sado and Shunsui Kyōraku clashed on the grounds during the Ryoka Invasion, with Sado inflicting most of the damage.

Personality

Under Shunsui Kyōraku the Eighth carried an unmistakably loose, indulgent reputation, famous for a weekly gathering that, by unwritten custom, barred men and instead drew in Rangiku Matsumoto and her friends. Kyōraku openly welcomed women above all else, yet the real discipline flowed from his lieutenant, whose strictness kept the company in order. The Shinigami Women's Association pegs it as the home for those who prize sophistication and elegance, with the reminder that training must still come before flair.

History

The company keeps the standard structure of a Gotei 13 division. More than a hundred years ago its lieutenant, Lisa Yadomaru, was forced into exile after she was unwillingly turned into a Visored, and Nanao Ise eventually stepped into the vacant post. Once the Quincy Blood War ended, Kyōraku moved up to captain the First Division and Nanao transferred away, clearing the path for Lisa to return, take the captaincy herself, and install Yuyu Yayahara as her lieutenant. No special duties have ever been recorded for the Eighth.
