Nanao Ise

Nanao is slim and youthful, wearing her long black hair pinned back with flat bangs that sweep down the right side of her face, and she looks out through oval glasses at eyes that are a bluish shade tinged with violet, all above a standard shihakushō. As a child she wore rounder frames and a chin-length cut. In the months after Aizen's defeat she tucks her bangs behind one ear, and a decade past Yhwach she returns to her earlier style. She bears a striking resemblance to her late mother, especially in adulthood.

Serious and pragmatic, Nanao endures her captain's endless silly teasing while remaining unfailingly loyal, most often answering his flirtation with a fan to the head. Taking off her glasses is an act so intimidating that it has reduced even the cold Mayuri Kurotsuchi to a stammering wreck. She is a passionate reader and library regular, a gifted calculator who handles the paperwork Shunsui avoids, and vice-president of the Women's Association, where Yachiru habitually overrules her. She also pens a popular column in the Seireitei Communication and frequently locks horns with the men's association's Tetsuzaemon Iba.

Nanao is the daughter of Shunsui's deceased elder brother and the former head of the entirely female Ise Clan. Orphaned young and raised by elderly relatives, she excelled at Kidō in the Shin'ō Academy despite being unable to imprint on her Asauchi. During the Soul Society arc she attends Shunsui against Sado, nearly delivering a finishing blow before he stops her, and is left paralyzed by Yamamoto's overwhelming reiatsu. In the Thousand-Year Blood War she becomes co-lieutenant of the 1st Division when Shunsui takes command, halts Jugram Haschwalth with her Hakudan Keppeki barrier, and at last receives the sword her mother entrusted to Shunsui. In the Royal Realm she chooses to accept the Ise curse and wields the edgeless sacred blade Shinken Hakkyōken, reflecting Lille Barro's own power back to disintegrate him with her uncle at her side. A Kidō expert who can cast without incantation and a capable Shunpo user, she nonetheless struggles as a swordsman, terrified in her first true blade-to-blade fight.
