Izumi Ishida

Izumi wore her black hair short. Her outfits tended toward a cardigan over an inner shirt with a long skirt, or else a flowing maxi dress, and a scar marked the lower calf of her left leg.

Stern and exacting, Izumi shouldered the role of family head with grave seriousness. Preserving the purity of the Ishida bloodline consumed her, driven by dread that the Quincy were dwindling toward extinction. She cared fiercely for Ryuken and was left frantic when he fled their home carrying the dying Masaki. By her son's account, her husband's frequent absences frustrated her, and she directed much of that irritation at Masaki.

Izumi brought Masaki Kurosaki into the household so the girl, one of the last pure Quincy, would be safeguarded and might one day wed Ryuken and keep the family line intact. Over dinner she would press Masaki about her studies and her Quincy training, scolding her when progress lagged and reminding her that she was the sole survivor of the Kurosaki name.

Days afterward, Izumi confronted Masaki over word that she had broken Quincy law by rescuing a Shinigami from a Hollow. As the two argued and Ryuken tried to shoulder the blame, Masaki suddenly collapsed. Izumi was first to spot the Hollow-like hole opening on the girl's chest. Ryuken lifted Masaki and demanded to know where his father was; unable to answer, Izumi could only cry after him as he bolted from the house, begging him to return. As an Echt Quincy she carried Blut in her veins from birth, gathered spirit particles to shape weapons, and could sense Hollows and Shinigami alike.
