Appearance

Ryūken is a trim, middle-aged man with fair skin, white hair, and narrow blue eyes behind thin, rimless glasses. He favors a plain grey suit over a pale blue shirt, his necktie dotted with Quincy crosses. In his teenage years he wore his bangs swept to one side and dressed casually, in jackets, checkered shirts, and jeans instead of tailored suits.

Personality

As a youth he cared intensely about the survival of the Quincy line and about Masaki's welfare, but losing his wife, Kanae Katagiri, hardened him into a distant, clinical man estranged alike from his father and his son. He openly scorns his Quincy heritage as something that cannot pay the bills and urges Uryū to abandon it, insisting the Quincy will die out with Sōken's generation, even as blue crosses adorn his tie and his hospital.

His true feelings are harder to read. He restores Uryū's powers on the strict condition that his son sever every tie to the Shinigami, and speaks to the boy's unconscious body with unexpected tenderness. His grief for Kanae runs deep: after Yhwach's Auswählen kills her, he performs a prolonged autopsy to recover the Still Silver in her heart, forging it into an arrowhead meant to strike the Quincy emperor down.

History

Paired with Kanae from childhood, a mixed-blood tasked with guarding him as a pureblood, Ryūken grows up amid Quincy custom. As a teenager he tries to stop Masaki Kurosaki from entering battle, and when a Hollow's infection begins consuming her, he carries her to Urahara, where Isshin agrees to save her through a Shinigami's power. He later marries Kanae, who bears Uryū before dying the same year Masaki is killed.

Years on, he rescues Uryū from Hollows and reveals that he never truly lost his own abilities, offering to return his son's spent powers through a brutal regimen that ends with him shooting the boy himself. During the war with the Wandenreich he and Isshin slip into Wahrwelt through a portal once used by Sōken, and there he hands Uryū the silver arrowhead, declaring that his son should be the one to loose it at Yhwach.

An Echt Quincy from birth, Ryūken inherits every technique of his lineage and ranks as a master archer, able to fire single-handed and place a shot with millimeter precision. He manipulates Reishi into a white Heilig Bogen that he can resize at will, unleashes volleys of Heilig Pfeil and the rapid-fire Klavier, and commands both Hirenkyaku and the defensive Blut.
