Kanae Katagiri

Katagiri wears her black hair gathered into a large bun. Through her years of service she dressed in an old-fashioned maid's outfit, and in the period after Uryū's birth she let her hair fall loose and switched to a white dress shirt paired with dark bottoms.

Ever the dutiful servant, Katagiri is unfailingly courteous and reserved, addressing Ryūken as young master and lending a patient ear to his worries. She grasps the burden he shoulders as an Echt Quincy and stands ready with counsel, so bound to him as his protector that she cannot bear to watch him grieve.

One rainy evening Katagiri offered to set the table and listened as Ryūken confessed his doubts over whether Masaki Kurosaki could be happy in a marriage arranged solely to preserve pure Quincy blood; she gently assured him that a man who placed love above status could never make his bride miserable. After Masaki was hurt by the Hollow known as White, Katagiri told Ryūken's mother Izumi so that Masaki might be healed and the Ishida line safeguarded, a choice that angered Ryūken until she reminded him such preservation was everything. Standing with an umbrella in the rain, she refused his command to leave, insisting her life had belonged to him since the day they first met and pleading with him not to sorrow.

The two eventually married, and she gave birth to Uryū. Six years before her son would meet Ichigo Kurosaki, Yhwach unleashed Auswählen, stripping the powers from every Quincy he deemed impure; Katagiri collapsed and died three months later. Consumed by grief, Ryūken performed a prolonged autopsy despite Uryū's pleas, extracting the silver clot the Auswählen had formed in her heart and forging it into an arrowhead meant to bring Yhwach down.
