Ichigo vs Uryū?! Who is the Traitor?!

Kūgo is cut off from Ichigo by a dropped chandelier and boxed in by Moe Shishigawara and the rest of Xcution. Meanwhile Tsukishima explains the nature of his blade: it does not rewrite memory or time but slips his own presence into a person's history, making everyone but Ichigo believe they have always known him. When Ichigo lunges, Orihime's shield and Sado's fist stop him cold, both convinced the wrong man is their enemy.

Across the estate, Kūgo weathers the combined assault of Jackie, Giriko, Riruka, and Moe, whose Jackpot Knuckle finally launches him through a window. Realizing he cannot win outnumbered, he races to reach Ichigo, arriving just in time to take a strike meant for the substitute's back. He assures Ichigo that Tsukishima's influence has not touched him, and the pair resolve to fell Tsukishima before it can.

Uryū then drops in, his allegiance impossible to read since he too was cut yet somehow healed. He warns Ichigo that the traitor is standing right behind him, and the accusation proves true. Kūgo deflects Uryū's arrow, strikes Ichigo down, and reveals he deliberately let Tsukishima cut him twice to shed the illusion and revert to his real self. Fixing a Substitute Shinigami Badge to his blade, he declares Ichigo's Fullbring his own and drives his sword into Ichigo's chest.

Tsukishima's power is fully explained as the insertion of false shared history, accounting for why Sado, Orihime, and others now treat Ichigo as the enemy. Kūgo appears to take a blow protecting Ichigo, gaining his trust at the critical moment.

The episode's twist lands when Uryū exposes Kūgo as the genuine traitor. Kūgo confirms it, revealing that submitting to Tsukishima's cuts freed him from the ruse, then betrays Ichigo outright and moves to claim his power.

Drawn from chapter 456 through 458 of the Lost Substitute Shinigami arc, this episode reframes the entire preceding conflict as Kūgo's long con. The comedic Shinigami Illustrated Picture Book stages a mock quiz show in which Ichigo, Sado, and Orihime try to guess Uryū's identity, provoking the Quincy into firing arrows at Ichigo's hat.
