The Swordless Soldier

The chapter opens on comic relief at the apartment where Ikkaku and Yumichika are boarding, with Ikkaku stuffed into a garish bear-print shirt handed down by his landlady and Rangiku letting herself in through an unlocked door to mock him. Keigo blunders in, lunges at Rangiku, and gets flattened for it, and the landlady Mizuho storms the scene before Ikkaku shoos Rangiku off to her real errand. The mood shifts under the Urahara Shop, where Yoruichi has delivered Orihime to watch Chad and Renji trade blows.

Urahara gets to the point Orihime dreads. With a brutal winter war coming, he tells her plainly that she will not be joining the fight, because Tsubaki, her only means of attack, was shattered by Yammy and she has no idea how to mend him. Chad protests that her gift to shield and heal outweighs raw combat, but Urahara counters that Santen Kesshun is too limited for what lies ahead and that the Fourth Division will manage the wounded. A fighter who cannot fight, he concludes, would only become a liability.

Orihime accepts the verdict gracefully, thanks them, and slips away, while Renji tells Chad to let it go, arguing that her nature simply is not that of a warrior. In Las Noches, Aizen studies Ulquiorra's recorded memory of Orihime restoring Chad's wounds with Soten Kisshun and remarks on how interesting her power is, a quiet seed of his true designs on her. This chapter was adapted into episode 127.
