Ichigo can barely believe Kenpachi is real. When Tesra demands the newcomer's name and lunges, Nnoitra shrieks at him to run, but the warning comes too late: Kenpachi cleaves the boar-Arrancar diagonally in two, shearing off his fist in the same motion. He then kicks Ichigo aside and turns to Nnoitra as his next opponent.

Kenpachi lays out the backstory. When the war began, Yamamoto ordered Urahara to stabilize the Garganta and carve a safe passage to Hueco Mundo, a three-month job the shopkeeper expected to finish in one. Now that the road is secured and Yachiru has popped out to gloat, the captains have come.

Szayelaporro, Zommari, and Rudbornn each find a captain planted before them. Mayuri faces Szayelaporro with Nemu at his side, Byakuya confronts Zommari, and Unohana meets Rudbornn while Isane states that the Fourth came only to heal. Zommari names himself the seventh Espada, and Mayuri gleefully eyes the Arrancar-filled realm as a research trove. In Aaroniero's palace, Byakuya coldly asks whether Zommari was the one who nearly killed Rukia, and out in the desert Nnoitra and Kenpachi trade names before their blades meet.
