Shout at the Dark

Kensei Muguruma flings Wonderweiss Margela clear and carries the battered Mashiro Kuna up to a nearby rooftop. Laying her down, she jokingly asks whether he means to avenge her, but he shuts the idea down, reminding her that her wounds came from ignoring his advice. He is not there to settle a score, he says, only to plant his fist in Wonderweiss, and with that he activates his Bankai and throws himself into the fight in earnest.

Elsewhere, Aizen sets about baiting the Visored. Shinji Hirako urges his comrades, Hiyori above all, to resist the provocations, warning that rushing Aizen without a scheme means annihilation. Aizen brushes the caution aside as pointless, insisting every outcome is already fixed and inescapable no matter how they move. When he needles them further by noting they perished a century ago, Hiyori snaps and charges with her released blade, only to be cut clean in two by Gin Ichimaru's Shikai. Ichimaru coolly tallies one kill. Shinji catches her severed upper half and calls for Hachi, then despairs on remembering that the missing-armed Hachi cannot heal. His thoughts turn to Orihime Inoue, and he bellows for Ichigo Kurosaki, demanding to know what is keeping the pair from returning to Karakura Town. Far off in Hueco Mundo, Ichigo presses grimly onward toward a destination unknown.

Kensei carries Mashiro to safety and enters Bankai to take on Wonderweiss directly. Aizen's taunts about predetermined fate goad Hiyori into a reckless charge, and Gin bisects her with his extending sword. A frantic Shinji, unable to find a healer, cries out for the still-absent Ichigo, who is shown racing through Hueco Mundo toward the battlefield.

Closing out volume 43, KINGDOM OF HOLLOWS, this installment was adapted as part of episode 285, The Hundred-Year Grudge...Hiyori's Revenge. Its title nods to the desperate cries that punctuate the scene, from Kensei's rooftop resolve to Shinji's shout for the absent Ichigo.
