Summary

Racing along a Garganta pathway with Orihime, Sado, Nel, and Pesche, Ichigo grills Urahara about his sudden appearance, and Urahara explains he pieced together the Arrancar arrivals, Ichigo's earlier fight, and the disturbance in Soul Society as one connected threat. The group emerges high above Hueco Mundo, saved from the fall by Orihime's Santen Kesshun.

Hiding among ruins, they watch Jagdarmee soldiers move on, convinced nothing living remains. The desert is strewn with mutilated Hollows and Arrancar, and Pesche points out a blue flame of condensed Reishi the Wandenreich used to burn even the stone. Learning captives may share the dead's fate, Ichigo resolves to free them, and his friends follow.

Elsewhere the prisoners are lined up in front of the Jagdarmee leader, Sternritter J Quilge Opie. He announces a lethal selection, he will stab each Arrancar in turn, sparing only those who grovel. When one steps forward to pledge loyalty, Quilge impales him, clarifying that survival merely earns a shot at the Wandenreich's entrance exam. Loly Aivirrne and Menoly Mallia turn on him, still armed, but Quilge cuts through Menoly's blade and downs Loly, then orders them punished rather than killed for showing courage.

He dismisses Aizen and his Arrancar as weak, only for Pulsera Cuerno to tear through his men. Up on the rocks stand Cyan Sung-Sun, Emilou Apacci, and Franceska Mila Rose, furious at his contempt for Harribel.
