Summary

Eyeing Power's swollen new horns, Makima explains that too much zombie blood has made her unmanageable and must be drained to dull her strength. With Power set aside and nervous, Denji is teamed instead with the Shark Fiend, Beam, who erupts from the floor to embrace him and is promptly knocked away. Makima notes that Beam adores Denji and will obey his every command, then, sensing Denji's sour mood, asks him out. The next day an over-eager Denji turns up hours early, and Makima reveals her plan: a marathon of films at a local cinema lasting until midnight.

Key Events

Through movie after movie Denji notices that neither he nor Makima ever laughs along with the crowd, and after each one she offers a brief critique of plot and camerawork until the day starts to bore him. Before the final film Denji confesses the stories leave him cold, and Makima admits she is much the same, except for the rare few that, as she puts it, changed her life. During that last screening Denji is startled to find himself weeping at a small, ordinary scene, and beside him Makima is quietly crying too. Leaving in high spirits, Denji asks whether she thinks he has a heart; she leans in, listens to his heartbeat, confirms that he does, and walks off with a smile, leaving him flushed in the street.
