Personality

Warmhearted yet easily led astray, George clings to the belief that Dario Brando once rescued him, when in truth Dario had been trying to rob him. His generosity runs so deep that he insists he gave away his ring freely and pulls Dario from jail, and out of that same misplaced gratitude he welcomes Dario's son into his home without noticing the boy's malice. He loves Jonathan dearly but raises him sternly, holding him against the polished Dio and hoping to mold a gentleman; the harsh punishments he metes out reflect the customs of his day more than any cruelty of his own. In the end his devotion is absolute, and he throws himself onto the blade meant for his son.

History

Born to the upper class, George loses his wife Mary in an 1868 carriage accident and comes away convinced that the thief Dario Brando saved him. Even after an inspector reveals Dario had landed in jail for pawning Mary's wedding ring, George refuses to press charges, urges the man to live honorably, and funds a hotel venture that fails. Over the next twelve years he raises his lone son Jonathan. When a letter arrives from the dying Dario, George honors the supposed debt by taking in Dario's son Dio Brando and embracing him fully, only to be charmed by the boy's manners into scolding Jonathan again and again.

Eight years on, George falls gravely ill, secretly poisoned by Dio; Jonathan uncovers the plot and a cure in Ogre Street. As constables move to arrest Dio, the young man lunges to stab Jonathan and claim the Stone Mask, and George throws himself into the strike, taking the fatal wound in his son's place. He dies cradled by Jonathan, comforting him that no better place exists for a father to die, and his remains are later consumed by the blaze that razes the Joestar Mansion.
