Wrappings covered Mu almost head to toe, leaving just his nose and violet eyes on show and giving him a mummy's silhouette; even his shoeless feet were bound. He topped this with a blank dark headband and plain black trousers. Reanimation turned his sclerae black and his irises white after Kabuto wiped out his personality. During his living years he wore Iwagakure's flak jacket, its lone-sleeved cut sitting over his left arm, together with the standard forehead protector, and he slung two slim-gripped, bandaged swords across his back.

Mu stayed unnervingly calm, unfazed even by his own forced revival, and spoke to the other summoned Kage with courtesy, granting an honorific to the rival who had slain him and nursing no grudge. That politeness sat atop a cold pragmatism, though: nothing outweighed his village's gain, and he urged his pupil to grab the spoils of any postwar moment to keep Iwagakure supreme, a merciless habit that soured the village's name and earned the Second Mizukage's hatred. Even under enemy control he still tried to aid the alliance where he could, and the anime gives him a late change of heart, pressing Onoki to protect the coalition's future.

Years before the first great shinobi war, Mu joined Onoki in confronting Madara Uchiha after their villages had allied; Madara brazenly declared Konoha would remain dominant and that they owed him obedience, upon which the pair took him on and lost. As Second Tsuchikage he drove Iwagakure to gather tailed beasts, ended his bitter feud with Gengetsu Hozuki in a duel that killed them both, and handed the Dust Release down to Onoki. His strength was extraordinary. As a sensor he could feel chakra across kilometres and tell kin apart by signature, he could cleave himself into two halves to escape a killing blow at the price of half his power, and he commanded every one of the five natures.

Rarest of his gifts was Dust Release, a kekkei tota that fuses fire, earth, and wind to crush a target to dust at the molecular scale, while Water Release let him erase his presence completely, the trick that earned him the Non-Person title. Kabuto Yakushi brought him back for the war alongside three more dead Kage, and though Gaara picked out his unseen approach, Mu summoned the other Kage and eventually crossed blades with his old student Onoki. Naruto and Gaara together finally landed a hit and pinned him to the earth, and he was sealed, but not before dividing in two; the surviving half was then forced to summon Madara Uchiha. When the reincarnation jutsu was at last undone, Mu's mind came back to him just as his form crumbled and his spirit slipped away to the other side.
