Summoned to meet Akito alongside the other zodiac, Kyo braces for a trap. The encounter turns savage, dredging up the wager that binds his freedom to defeating Yuki and the promise of a cage should he fail. Yet amid the abuse, Kyo grasps something he has spent years refusing to name, and it changes how he carries the weight of what awaits him.

Kyo notices how much his name means when Tohru speaks it, and how badly he wants to see her smile. When Shigure relays that Akito wishes to see him, Tohru is glad while Kyo suspects a trick. At the annex he clashes with Yuki, who warns him to stay careful, and nearly throws a punch before striking a doorframe instead. Akito greets him with contempt, branding him a pitiful monster and recalling their bargain: prove himself against Yuki, or be locked away until death once high school ends.

Akito hurls a windchime, seizes Kyo's arm, and accuses him of killing his own mother, triggering flashbacks that leave Kyo begging him to stop. When Akito turns on Tohru, calling her a monster for not flinching at Kyo's true form and hinting she is at fault, Kyo insists she held onto him despite her fear. In that moment he understands that her staying beside him, rather than erasing his pain, is what saved him, and he realizes he loves her. Akito laughs, slaps him, and swears the confinement is inevitable even as he claims he will visit out of love.

Walking home, Kyo sinks into despair, wishing his mother had ended him rather than herself, until he remembers Kazuma telling him not to crush a small flower because hope will bloom from it. He recognizes that for every person who casts him aside, another will reach out, and recalls meeting Kyoko, who once showed him a photo of the daughter she adored. He finds Tohru at the beach and sees in her that blossoming hope, resolving to stay with her for as long as he possibly can before the cage closes.

Adapted from chapters sixty-two and sixty-three, the episode was directed for the dub by Caitlin Glass with a script by Bonny Clinkenbeard, running Prism and Ad Meliora. Its title borrows a line of Kyo's. The installment lays bare Akito's delusion and abusiveness toward the zodiac, an instability the series shows steadily worsening. A few brief manga beats, including Shigure watching Kyo leave the manor, were cut from the anime.
