Shapesmith is a cheerful, bumbling Martian who fled his homeworld and hid on Earth under the borrowed identity of Rus Livingston. After his reckless choices helped unleash a parasitic invasion, he reinvents himself as a costumed hero and wins a place among the Guardians of the Globe.
When operating as a hero, Shapesmith reshapes his own skin into what looks like a blue and orange costume, complete with an angular S across the chest and a blue mask over the eyes. Stripped back to his real Martian shape, he resembles almost any other member of his species, the one small tell being oversized orange pupils that mark him out during his rare unmasked moments.
Endlessly upbeat and more than a little scatterbrained, Shapesmith rarely grasps how humans read a room or what they are feeling, and his good cheer never fades even when he blunders into disaster. A shaky moral compass compounds the problem, since he nearly wiped out his own people and came close to doing the same to Earth without truly registering the weight of it, offering apologies only when others corner him. He once sat on information that could have gotten the Guardians killed simply because no one thought to ask him for it. Living as Rus Livingston, he could barely hold a normal conversation, and his neighbors chalked up the oddness to trauma from his supposed ordeal on Mars.
As a Martian, Shapesmith carries the metamorphic biology of his race, born beneath the surface of Mars in a hidden underground city. His signature gift is shapeshifting, letting him rearrange his form to imitate almost any person he chooses. His anatomy is far tougher than a human's, with all of his vital organs packed into a single small red sphere inside his body, so he can absorb wounds that would kill an ordinary man. He survived being ripped in two by one of Invincible's evil doubles because that core stayed intact, then slowly knit the halves back together with help, revealing a healing factor. He can also stretch his limbs at will, using the elasticity to shield teammates and pull people out of danger. Only shattering the hidden organ-sphere can genuinely kill him.
Shapesmith is voiced by Ben Schwartz in Invincible.
