Summary

Midnight is ready to draw lots for the tournament bracket when Mashirao Ojiro asks to be excused. His run through the Human Cavalry Battle happened while Hitoshi Shinso's Quirk had hold of him, and although he knows a stage this rare is not something to throw away lightly, he cannot stomach advancing on effort that was never his. Toru and Mina argue with him, but he answers that his pride is the thing he is protecting. Nirengeki Shoda of Class 1-B bows out for the identical reason, and Midnight, impressed by both arguments, waves them through.

The vacancies fall to the fifth place team, Kendo's squad, who pass the chance along to Team Tetsutetsu instead, delighting Tetsutetsu. Midnight names Tetsutetsu and Ibara Shiozaki as the replacements, then reveals the pairings once the lots are pulled. Izuku finds Hitoshi's name across from his. The brainwasher wanders over and puts a question to him, and Mashirao physically stops Izuku from opening his mouth.

Recreational events fill the gap before the bracket starts. As they wrap up, All Might catches Izuku on his way out. Izuku thinks he has One For All under control, then corrects himself: the boost he manages is tiny, and All Might's estimate of barely five percent lands hard. His mentor tells him not to fret and to smile through the nerves, because someone is always watching.

The first bout begins. Hitoshi needles Izuku by calling Mashirao a fool for surrendering his place. Furious, Izuku charges and shouts at him to take it back, and then stops dead where he stands.
