Kaneki leans on a sugar cube to survive human food, brushes off a suspicious visit from Nishiki's girlfriend, and takes on a grim errand from Yoshimura that pairs him with the intimidating Yomo for a supply run into an unsettling place.
Kaneki again tries and fails to stomach the sandwiches, even with all of Yoshimura's coaching, and settles instead for the sugar cube in his coffee. When Hide remarks that he looks far healthier than his earlier zombie-pale self, Kaneki privately credits the sugar. A girl thought to be Nishiki's girlfriend arrives with a DVD Nishiki had promised. Hide tries to learn where Nishiki is hospitalized, but she withholds it and walks off. In truth Nishiki is not hospitalized at all, and Kaneki suspects the girl came only to size the two of them up and report back.
The 20th ward has grown dangerous, with word spreading of killings by Doves, leaving ghouls warier than ever. Kaneki grasps that information is the currency of the ghoul world and that Anteiku is where it circulates. He learns his mask is finished and that Touka has stepped away from work to prepare for exams. Yoshimura then asks him a favor: to go shopping for food supplies, meaning human meat. Reluctant at first, Kaneki agrees once he understands he will not have to kill.
Curious what Yomo is like, Kaneki finds him frightening and tight-lipped once they meet, and grows frustrated at being repeatedly ignored. He stumbles off a cliff edge and drops to the forest floor, unhurt thanks to his ghoul durability, then grows uneasy at the eerie place where the real shopping is to happen.
Kaneki discovers he can tolerate sugar cubes even though other human food fails him. A woman believed to be Nishiki's girlfriend delivers a DVD but refuses information, deepening Kaneki's suspicion. With the 20th ward turning perilous under Dove killings, Kaneki learns his mask is ready and that Touka is on exam leave. He accepts Yoshimura's request to gather human meat and is partnered with the cold, silent Yomo for the run.
