Legendary seiyuu best known for GeGeGe no Kitarō's Medama Oyaji. Voiced multiple Dragon Ball characters including Dr. Lychee and various antagonists across Z films and TV series.
Tanonaka voiced several characters across the Dragon Ball franchise, most notably Dr. Lychee in the theatrical film Dragon Ball: Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans, a story written specifically to highlight his character's villainy. He also provided voices for secondary but memorable characters in Dragon Ball Z, voicing Raiti and Bibidi, Majin Buu's mystical creators. His deep, authoritative voice made him well-suited for antagonistic roles. Late in the Z era, he voiced Old Kai in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3, demonstrating his continued ability to bring gravitas to wise elder characters. His comparatively limited but impactful Dragon Ball work reflected his status as an established voice acting veteran by the time the franchise required specialized casting.
Tanonaka was best known as the voice of Medama Oyaji in GeGeGe no Kitarō, a role he became synonymous with throughout his career. He also famously voiced Tensai Bakabon in Outrageously Bakabon and appeared in the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series. His career spanned from 1958 until his death in 2010, making him one of anime and tokusatsu's most enduring voice actors. Based in Tokyo, he worked with multiple talent agencies including Gekidan Tōgei, Theatre Echo, and Aoni Production. Tanonaka's final role was as Leonardo da Vinci in Marie and Gali. He died on January 13, 2010, at age 77 from myocardial infarction in his Setagaya home, survived by his older brother Hiroshi.
