Goku extends the Power Pole from Korin Tower and ascends through a thunderstorm to reach the Lookout. There he meets Mr. Popo, whose speed and technique completely overwhelm him. Even the Kamehameha and Penetrate technique prove useless.

Goku trains under Mr. Popo to eliminate wasted movement in his fighting. When Kami finally reveals himself, Goku attacks, mistaking him for King Piccolo. Kami explains that he and Piccolo were once a single being, split apart so he could become Earth's Guardian.

Kami resurrects Shenron using a stone figure repaired by Mr. Popo. The Dragon Balls reactivate immediately, and at Kame House the group summons Shenron. Everyone killed by King Piccolo and his minions is wished back to life, including Krillin, Master Roshi, and Chiaotzu.

Mr. Popo sends Goku to Mount Rumble to retrieve a Sacred Crown that attracts lightning. Goku must learn to sense and dodge bolts faster than he can see. A girl named Chuu Lee and her lost bird teach him to feel rather than react.

Mr. Popo sends Goku into a forest to find someone who can sharpen his mind. After being tricked by a woodsman's trap, Goku meets a large family and the local strongman Yaochun. But the true teacher turns out to be an old fisherman named Korinto.

After another loss to Mr. Popo, Goku is sent back in time through the Time Room. He meets the young Master Roshi and Master Shen, and trains under their legendary teacher Mutaito, learning the concept of spirit energy by splitting a waterfall in two.

Mr. Popo creates a clay replica of Goku as a sparring partner. The doll fights with perfect focus and zero mental interference, exposing every flaw in Goku's concentration. Meanwhile, Tien, Krillin, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu begin their trek toward Korin Tower.

Tien, Krillin, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu arrive at a mountain village during a festival. Meanwhile, Goku plays a blindfolded game of tag with Mr. Popo to sharpen his ki sensing. The celebration turns dangerous when the village's sacred mountain reveals itself to be a volcano.

The volcano erupts with devastating force, and Tien, Krillin, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu work together to divert the lava and protect the village. Above the clouds, Goku continues his blindfolded ki training with Mr. Popo. The three-year countdown to the tournament begins in earnest.

Three years have passed. The warriors reunite at Papaya Island for the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. A tall stranger helps Bulma retrieve a balloon, and when he removes his turban, everyone is stunned to see it is Goku, now a teenager. That night, Piccolo Jr. arrives.

The 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament preliminaries begin. Goku defeats King Chappa with a single invisible chop. A mysterious girl and a masked man win their matches easily. Chiaotzu is eliminated by Mercenary Tao, who has returned as a cyborg seeking revenge.

The 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament advances to its quarterfinal round. Yajirobe falls in the preliminaries, the final eight matchups are drawn, and Tien prepares to face his former master, Mercenary Tao, in a deeply personal opening bout.

Tien Shinhan faces his former master, the now-cybernetic Mercenary Tao, in the first quarterfinal match. When Tao draws a hidden blade and cannon to kill his former student, Tien proves his growth by dismantling every attack with ease.

Goku faces an anonymous woman in the second quarterfinal who claims he broke a promise to her. After defeating her with a shockwave punch, he learns she is Chi-Chi and proposes marriage on the spot. Krillin then begins his match against the terrifying Ma Junior.

Piccolo overwhelms Krillin with terrifying power, stretching his arm across the ring to batter him into submission. Krillin forfeits, and the fourth quarterfinal begins as Yamcha faces the seemingly clumsy Hero, who hides far more skill than anyone suspects.

Hero defeats Yamcha using superior technique, then reveals his true identity as Kami to Goku with a knowing wink. The semifinal between Goku and Tien Shinhan begins, and even Piccolo watches eagerly as the two rivals appear evenly matched at first.

Tien splits into four copies using the Multi-Form technique, turning the semifinal into a four-on-one assault. Goku discovers two critical flaws in the technique, blinds all four Tiens with a Solar Flare, and eliminates them from the ring to claim victory.

Kami confronts his evil counterpart Piccolo in the second semifinal, revealing their shared origin. When Kami attempts the Evil Containment Wave to seal Piccolo in a bottle, Piccolo reverses it, trapping Kami instead and swallowing the bottle whole.

Piccolo swallows the bottle containing Kami, and Goku reveals Piccolo's true identity to his friends. The championship match begins with the fate of the world hanging in the balance as Goku and Piccolo trade blows that shake the arena.

Goku and Piccolo push each other to terrifying new levels. Piccolo fires a Makosen blast that obliterates a mountain range, and Goku counters with the Super Kamehameha after Krillin reminds him that the Dragon Balls can revive Kami.

Piccolo survives the Super Kamehameha and reveals his true identity as King Piccolo's reincarnation to the entire world. The panicked crowd flees, and Piccolo transforms into a giant to crush Goku, but the young fighter proves size alone is not enough.

Goku dives down Piccolo's throat to retrieve the bottle containing Kami, freeing the Guardian and forcing Piccolo back to normal size. After a spectacular aerial exchange, Piccolo regenerates a torn-off arm and begins charging his most destructive attack yet.

Piccolo unleashes the Hyper Explosive Demon Wave, leveling the entire island. Goku survives and batters the weakened Piccolo with a Super Kamehameha, but Piccolo fires a Mouth Energy Wave that blasts a hole clean through Goku's chest.

With every limb broken and a hole in his chest, Goku launches himself skyward at the last instant, headbutting Piccolo for a ring-out victory. Healed by a Senzu Bean, Goku shocks everyone by feeding one to Piccolo, then declines Kami's offer to become Guardian and flies off with Chi-Chi.

Goku and Chi-Chi arrive at the Ox-King's castle for wedding preparations, but flames erupt from the ground and engulf the castle with the Ox-King trapped inside protecting Chi-Chi's mother's wedding dress. A quest for the legendary Bansho Fan begins.

Goku and Chi-Chi search for the Fire-Eater bird on volcanic Mount Kiwi, hoping its feathers can create a new Bansho Fan. The Pilaf Gang returns with plans to steal the last Fire-Eater egg, but a volcanic eruption hatches the bird and foils everyone's plans.

Goku and Chi-Chi travel to snowy Mount Frappe to find the Bansho Fan. While Goku battles the Pilaf Gang on the mountain, Chi-Chi discovers the actual fan in an old woman's garden. But when they return to Fire Mountain, even the legendary fan cannot extinguish the flames.

With the Bansho Fan useless, Fortuneteller Baba sends Goku and Chi-Chi to the Magical Furnace in the Dark World to find its guardian. After surviving illusions and monsters, Goku reunites with his beloved Grandpa Gohan and meets the furnace keeper, Annin.

Annin and Goku devise a plan to repair the Magical Furnace without destroying it. Using the Bansho Fan and ingredients Chi-Chi collected along the way, Goku descends into the furnace and seals the leak. The fire dies, the Ox-King survives, and Goku and Chi-Chi finally get married.
