Appearance

Taller than most and built like an athlete, Maki keeps her long hair, black in the manga and dark green in the anime, gathered into a short ponytail, with fringe across her forehead and loose strands at her cheeks. Her eyes read green on the page and amber on screen, and because her cursed energy is so low she once depended on a pair of cursed-tool glasses just to perceive curses. During her years inside the family she dressed in a white yukata over a black hakama; her early school look paired the standard jacket with a pencil skirt, which she later swapped for leggings and a new set of glasses as a second-year.

During Shibuya, Jogo's flames seared much of her, the burns running up both arms and across the sides of her face, and her hair, cut or burned away, now stops near her ears. To leave her arms exposed she reworked her uniform into a sleeveless black turtleneck under a pinned cape, cinched by a broad brown belt over snug black pants, with her wounded right eye wrapped in bandages. Her father's katana later cost her that eye entirely during the clan conflict, after which she dropped the cape; by the time the Culling Game began the cape was back and the eye had fully recovered.

Personality

Stubborn and blunt, Maki refuses to lean on anyone and is determined to climb out from under the expectations her own relatives imposed on her. Cursed techniques are the whole currency of a sorcerer clan, yet she lacked even the energy needed to see curses, and the added contempt aimed at women in such families turned her into a target for constant abuse. Rather than break, she decided to grow into a powerful sorcerer purely to defy and dismantle everything the Zenin stood for. That resolve gives her a hard, impatient edge; she has little regard for Satoru Gojo's clownish manner and openly brands her own teacher a moron. She drilled Yuta brutally so he could one day fight at her side, and she passed the same demanding lessons in weaponry and situational awareness down to Megumi and Nobara.

She started out scornful of the shy Yuta, but a shared mission taught them to see eye to eye. When he confessed he simply wanted permission to exist, she told him that was exactly the point of the school and pushed him toward using his curse for the sake of others. Having spent years denying that she wanted to be accepted at all, she grew flustered the moment Yuta praised her sincerely. By her second year she had settled into a leadership role, drawn to Megumi as a fellow clan reject and to Nobara as the only other girl, though teasing that could turn cruel sometimes earned her the label of a heartless demon. Sorcery's morality interested her far less than proving herself, and her bond with her twin Mai stayed broken for years, the sisters trading insults instead of mending things.

Losing Mai changed her completely. Made to release her sister the instant they reconciled, and bound by a vow to tear it all down, she wiped out the Zenin without a flicker of feeling, telling Naoya plainly that her heart had been stolen from her. Even then a part of her wanted to find decency in her kin, so she gave her mother one last chance before ending her. Afterward she stalled, comfortable being no more than equal to her peers, until Rokujushi Miyo coached her through sumo and unlocked her mind, letting her sense her whole surroundings and announce, proudly, that she had reached her peak. For all of it she stayed warm and loyal to her friends, connecting with Noritoshi over their tangled families and warning him off the mistakes she had made.

Abilities

Her grade 4 label wildly undersold what she could do; only friction with the clan kept the promotion away, and both Gojo and Mei Mei agreed she belonged at grade 2 at minimum, capable of clearing grade 2 curses without effort. Though born without sorcery, her Heavenly Restriction, dubbed Physically Gifted, swapped almost all cursed energy for extraordinary bodily power, and mastery of cursed tools let her function as a sorcerer anyway. At the Goodwill Event she dispatched Kasumi Miwa and Mai in turn, traded blows with the special grade Hanami beside Megumi, and held her ground in Shibuya against Dagon even after veteran grade 1s urged her to retreat.

Mai's sacrifice handed Maki every scrap of energy the twins had shared, scrubbing her clean of cursed energy and gifting her a body of steel on par with Toji Fushiguro. In a heartbeat she struck her father down, then leveled the Kukuru Unit and the Hei and overcame Naoya, yet inner restraints capped her until Miyo's teaching opened the rest. Free at last, she could read inorganic matter and feel shifts in air density and warmth to predict an enemy's motion and even kick off through empty space, rising to a war god the equal of Toji and trading blows with a 16-finger Sukuna at Yuji's side.

No one at Tokyo Jujutsu High handles cursed tools better; a master of many armed disciplines, she leans on polearms and spears yet trades weapons seamlessly mid-battle, and she personally schooled both Yuta and Megumi in close fighting. Her unarmed skill is fierce, frequently mixing kicks into her armed assaults, and once she gained her steel body she killed numerous Zenin with nothing but her hands. As a tactician she countered Aoi Todo, unraveled the Kyoto squad's plot to assassinate Yuji, and cracked the trick behind Naoya's speed. Strength, quickness, reflexes, and toughness all run extreme, enough to snatch a bullet from the air, endure being set ablaze, and rip free of cursed-technique bindings by raw force. With zero cursed energy she cannot be tracked, registers to barriers as a mere structure, and shrugs off most domains and their guaranteed hits. Her kit features the special grade three-section staff Playful Cloud, the force-banking Dragon-Bone, and Mai's parting gift, a Split Soul Katana replica that severs a target at the soul.
