Personality

Next to the predatory players surrounding him, Rin comes across as an artless young man, and he was quick to attach himself to Yuji Itadori, recognizing someone he knew from back home. His habit has always been to size up a situation and keep clear of trouble. Back in school he stuck close to a group of bullies, privately scorning them as neither clever nor athletic while staying on their good side to avoid being targeted and to enjoy the perks of going along with them. He first crossed paths with Yuji while doing nothing as a classmate was being picked on; he felt sorry for the boy but would not step in, unlike Yuji, who confronted the bullies and beat them, and when Yuji looked over to ask whether he too meant to fight, Rin was simply paralyzed with fear and ran, later taking a beating from those same bullies.

Through the Culling Game he was too frightened to do anything as Hanyu and Haba killed people. After Yuji broke their hold on him, Rin helped steer him toward Hiromi Higuruma and apologized for how they had first met, and he eventually showed his worth by rescuing Hana Kurusu from death. The guilt of his complicity stayed with him, leading him to confide his insecurities to Yuji and, once Sukuna was beaten, to seek out the very classmate he had failed so he could bow and make amends, only for that classmate to storm off and leave him crushed.

Abilities

Rin counts as a non-combatant sorcerer. Sorcery was absent at his birth, and only later did Kenjaku mark him, triggering Idle Transfiguration remotely to alter the souls of the marked and rewire Rin's brain so it could produce a cursed technique on the night of the Shibuya Incident. For all that, he stays weak against the other Culling Game players, pushed around and mistreated by Haba and Hanyu, who could have ended his life whenever they pleased. His unnamed technique, called Sugar Manipulation, allows him to push up his own sugar level and turn that sugar into something solid, most often pudding; the resulting drop in blood sugar then leaves him hypoglycemic and dizzy. Beyond shaping it himself, he is able to channel his sugar into other people as well. After watching it work only briefly, Shoko Ieiri brought him onto the medical team caring for Yuta Okkotsu, since his power could counter the steep sugar demand that reverse cursed technique placed on Yuta's brain. He also put the technique to use in halting an unconscious Hana Kurusu's plunge from a skyscraper, which, together with Fumihiko Takaba's Comedian, let her pull through.
