Setsuko Sasaki

Setsuko is a teenager who wears glasses, with blue eyes and black hair cut into a bob that falls just below her ears. Her usual look is her school uniform: a beige vest over a white long-sleeved shirt, a diagonally striped tie, a dark blue skirt, gray socks, and light-colored shoes.

Relaxed and easygoing, Setsuko likes to pass the time gaming in the clubroom. The occult fascinates her, and it is she who asks Yuji to fetch the cursed charm the club had found. When that request leads to a cursed spirit attacking, she is wracked with guilt for having put her friend in harm's way.

In June 2018, the Occult Research Club was midway through a Kokkuri session when the student council president showed up to seize their room over missing activity reports. Setsuko mounted a defense, putting forward the club's idea that a haunting was behind the shutdown of the rugby grounds, only for the president to dismiss it, pinning the closure on ticks and observing that Yuji held no official membership. Together with Takeshi she went along with Yuji to settle things with Takagi, the teacher; once Yuji had won at shot put, he confessed he truly wanted to stay on, and the pair gave their bashful agreement.

Come nightfall, the pair crept back into the clubroom to unseal the charm, discovered a human-like finger within, and were swarmed almost instantly by cursed spirits. Their flight scattered them apart, and once reunited Setsuko spotted a curse fastened to the top of Takeshi's head. Both teenagers had already lost consciousness, with a curse poised to devour them, by the moment Yuji and Megumi reached the scene and Yuji drove it off to save them. The following day she sat watch over the hospitalized Takeshi, heaping blame on herself, while Yuji countered that finding the charm had been his doing and assured her that help would arrive. Much later, during the Culling Game, Kenjaku appeared to her in a dream inside the Sendai Colony's barrier and gave her a single chance to leave, which she took; he steered her clear of the colony, offering thanks because she had been friendly toward his son. Waking beside Takeshi, she learned everyone had dreamed of the same long-haired man, which prompted Setsuko to suspect that the son he spoke of was Yuji.
