Chapter 161

Nejire Chan takes stock of the wreckage left where the Shie Hassaikai and the heroes fought. Rikiya Katsukame's Quirk put more than half the police force out of action, and everyone still standing joined the local heroes in tending the wounded. On the ground, those heroes find the toll remarkably light: three houses lost to Overhaul's Quirk and three people hurt, none of them seriously. Nejire lands to explain why, crediting Izuku with launching Overhaul's monstrous form skyward and finishing the fight in the air, which spared the neighborhood. She adds that oversized opponents are not her strong suit.

The injured are taken to a nearby university hospital. A full examination turns up nothing wrong with Izuku apart from his arms, which baffles the doctor, and Izuku waves it off to ask after the others. Shota Aizawa arrives with answers. Walking the hallway, he apologizes for being absent at the decisive moments and runs through the list: Eijiro Kirishima is wrapped in bandages over cuts and bruises but faces no danger, Tamaki Amajiki carries a deep split across his face that will close cleanly, Fat Gum is holding up despite broken bones, and Rock Lock was lucky that Himiko Toga's blade missed anything vital.

The relief does not last. Shota reveals that Eri remains unconscious with a fever that will not break, and that she has been placed in quarantine. He explains the reasoning as Izuku's own intelligence, since she cannot govern her Quirk, making isolation the sound choice for her safety and everyone else's. Her power touches only living things, never inorganic matter, which makes it nearly impossible to train, so Shota tells Izuku plainly that no one can count on it.

They come upon All Might and Recovery Girl standing beside Centipeder and Bubble Girl. She is the one who summoned them, but tears overtake her before she can explain, and Centipeder steadies her. The surgeon delivers it instead: no treatment remains for Sir Nighteye. Recovery Girl confirms her Quirk offers no path either. He will not see tomorrow. Everyone files into the room.

Nighteye opens his eyes, finds All Might there at last, and treats the timing as a joke at his own expense. All Might has no words, only remorse. Izuku pleads with the dying man to hold on, and Nighteye answers that he never blamed All Might, that he only ever wanted him happy, and that he accepts his old partner's choice to defy fate. All Might begs him to defy his own and asks for the chance to make amends. Nighteye admits he searched for a way to rewrite the future in which All Might is killed and found nothing, until Izuku showed him one, and he offers the theory that the collective wish for something better is what bent the outcome.

His one regret goes unspoken, because Mirio Togata bursts in. Sobbing, Mirio begs him not to go, and Nighteye apologizes for the hardships he put him through, while Mirio insists he owes the man everything he has become. Nighteye reflects on having first taken him on to carry One For All, on the admiration and faith Mirio returned anyway, and on the guilt of ever seeing him as anything less than his most treasured student. He lifts his hand to Mirio's face and spends Foresight one last time, seeing a future in which Mirio stands as a magnificent hero. He closes his eyes and asks them all to keep smiling, since society needs laughter to reach a brighter tomorrow, and dies at peace with a smile as the three weep.

Heroes and police sweep the compound while casualties are moved to nearby hospitals, and Shota briefs Izuku on each recovering hero's condition.

Eri stays unconscious and quarantined because her Quirk cannot be controlled or reliably trained. Sir Nighteye's wounds are confirmed beyond treatment.

All Might and Nighteye reconcile, and Nighteye reveals that Izuku broke the future he foresaw, restoring his hope. He then reads Mirio's future, sees a great hero in it, and dies moments later.

Installment 161 fills 17 pages, belongs to the Shie Hassaikai arc, and collects into volume 18. Japan saw it on November 27, 2017, in issue 52 of that year.

Izuku Midoriya takes the cover, and Episode 77 handles the adaptation. Foresight carries the closing scene, with Rewind and One For All also referenced, alongside Wave Motion, Energy Suck, Erasure, and Heal.
