Summary
The students prepare a play about the Sannin for an upcoming festival, with Kawaki cast as Katsuyu, Eiki as Jiraiya, Kae as Tsunade, and Osuka as Orochimaru. Osuka, who fancies herself better suited to the Fourth Hokage role that went to Himawari, asks everyone to bring mock forehead protectors to sell the performances. The following day, Sōsha publishes a piece about Eiki reading one of Jiraiya's Icha Icha books for research, embarrassing him into shredding the copies.
When everyone dons their protectors, Himawari has forgotten hers. Kawaki offers his own, but she declines and urges him to hide it, since it could expose him as a genin, especially to Sōsha. Eiki overhears and reports to Sōsha, showing her an anonymous note that first put him on Kawaki's trail.

Sōsha demands firmer proof, so Eiki promises to steal Kawaki's protector. Using the staged Manda-versus-Katsuyu fight, and swapping Ehō into the Jiraiya role, Eiki makes Kawaki drop the headband, but Kawaki hides it before the camera catches it. Eiki improvises a Summoning: Rashōmon with Osuka's help and grabs the protector, only to stand on the unfinished set and collapse it. Kawaki shields Eiki and Kae, and the protector Eiki hands over turns out to be a fake. Confronted, Eiki breaks down in tears, insisting he never meant to ruin things for everyone.
At Himawari's urging, Kawaki helps Eiki repair the set, joined by Kae. Kawaki realizes his genuine protector is still missing until Osuka quietly returns it, having switched it out during the Rashōmon chaos to repay him for a past rescue. Eiki later apologizes again and reveals the note branding Kawaki a shinobi with an expulsion-worthy secret, now dismissing it as a prank. Meanwhile, two Land of Bamboo officials, opposed to Kae's father naming her heir over her younger brother, dispatch an assassin. Kawaki reaches Kae's infirmary in time to foil the attempt, and the assassin slips away.
