Pursuing Hope

The gathered Kage steel themselves against a battle they cannot afford to lose, and nearby Naruto and Sasuke trade blows with Obito. Sakura keeps working on the failing Shikamaru, swearing not to let him slip away, when a cloak of Naruto's chakra wraps around the wounded man on its own. Ino observes that it is an unconscious extension of Naruto's will, and Shikamaru rallies briefly before Tsunade arrives to finish the healing and praise Sakura's effort.

After a short word with Hashirama, Tsunade and her fellow Kage gather the troops, and in Kamui's dimension Kakashi readies his return. The Alliance advances on the Ten-Tails' tree form; Orochimaru joins in at Hiruzen's prompting, striking with snakes while Hiruzen shears off a branch using Enma's staff form, and Tsunade and Sakura combine their seals to summon a portion of Katsuyu for the wounded. Obito shrugs off every attack from Naruto and Sasuke, then seizes both with chakra arms and forces them out of their Sage Tailed Beast Mode and Susanoo. Pressed on why he keeps fighting, Naruto declares that never breaking his word is his nindo, vowing to sleep and dream on his own terms as Sasuke's Susanoo closes around his Tailed Beast form.

The episode draws on chapters 648, 649, and 650 within the Birth of the Ten-Tails' Jinchuriki arc. It aired in Japan on 23 October 2014 and in English on 4 April 2017, with the opening Silhouette and the ending It's Absolutely No Good.
