Hinata and Himawari send Boruto off with good wishes before Sarada and Mitsuki collect him. At the gates they meet the other exam entrants, and Team Moegi remarks on how much Boruto's attitude toward the exams has shifted. Sumire and Denki review dossiers on foreign genin while Shikamaru delivers the opening address. Grabbing a meal beforehand, Boruto and Sarada butt heads with Yurui's team over a booth, and even after Mitsuki shows up the friction only cools when Shinki steps in. Chojuro passes Boruto a message from Kagura, while Kurotsuchi, Darui and Kankuro size up the young hopefuls.

Sai stuns the crowd by announcing a true-or-false quiz for the first stage, with the actual question waiting at a second site the genin must reach within a time limit while dodging Tenten's traps. Team Konohamaru clears the obstacles cleanly, so Tenten raises the stakes with sentry puppets; Team Shinki guards their jutsu from prying eyes, and Yurui simply gums his opponents in place. Those who arrive on time face a claim about the fifth volume of a shinobi handbook and must stand on the platform matching their answer.

Sarada knows the earlier volumes but never realized a fifth existed. Both groups plunge into a pit, and only those who avoid the ink move on. A Konoha shinobi quietly observes Boruto and reports to an unseen contact. Shikamaru tells Naruto that Boruto advanced and nudges him to reach out, so Naruto emails his son; Boruto reads it and swears to impress him in the next round.

Set in the Versus Momoshiki arc and adapting three chapters, the episode runs the opening It's All in the Game and the ending Beauties of Nature. It aired in Japan on May 3, 2018, and in English on April 21, 2020. Trivia observes that four Kumogakure genin were modeled on the early genin squad of Shinko Inari and Kakashi Hatake.
