Summary

Goaded by a jab about his weight, Chōji charges his old teacher but freezes before the strike connects, unwilling to wound the reanimated Asuma. Bound by no such hesitation, Asuma swats aside the chakra blade Shikamaru hurls at him and is compelled to strike Chōji. To everyone's astonishment the young man reacts, revealing that Ino has slipped her mind into his body. She urges him to recall what the earrings he wears truly mean. When Asuma looses a scorching wave of ash, Chōza shields the group with his own frame and demands that his son finally carry himself as the sixteenth head of the Akimichi clan and honor the vow that title carries. Remembering that oath, Chōji sprouts his butterfly wings, stunning the onlookers.

His comrades panic at how rapidly he is shedding weight, fearing he swallowed one of the Three Coloured Pills, but Chōza reassures them that the transformation is the clan's calorie-control art and that Chōji is unharmed. Satisfied that his help is no longer needed, Chōza departs after apologizing for his son's earlier faltering. Chōji readies the Butterfly Bullet Bombing while Ino, riding on Shikamaru's back, uses her Mind Clone Switch Technique to seize two fallen White Zetsu clones and take the fight to Asuma. Shikamaru's shadow strips away Asuma's footing, and Chōji hammers him into a rock face. Before being sealed, Asuma tells them their formation has at last become flawless, an assessment he could never offer while alive. Emboldened, Chōji swells to titanic size and vows to finish the battle with his teammates at his side.
