Naruto presses Sasuke on why he lingers beside a man who only covets his body. Sasuke answers that neither he nor Orochimaru could topple Itachi alone, so trading his flesh for the strength to avenge his clan is a bargain he will gladly make. Yamato admits he held back earlier out of regard for the pair, but warns he will now fight in earnest to haul Sasuke home. Sneering at the very idea, Sasuke drives his blade into the ground and weaves signs meant to finish all of them. Orochimaru seizes his wrist and forbids that jutsu, drawing a rude rebuke and a scolding from Kabuto, who reminds Sasuke that Team Kakashi is being kept alive to thin the Akatsuki and clear his path to Itachi. Relenting, the three vanish in a burst of flame.

Broken by his failure, Naruto weeps, and a tearful Sakura tells him that crying will not bring Sasuke back and that the two of them will press forward together. Sai volunteers to make it three, pleasing Yamato, and the mission is logged complete. At home the team reports to Tsunade, who orders them to rest until she calls again; Naruto's date offer to Sakura goes nowhere, and Sai's parting wave misses them entirely. At the hospital, Jiraiya walks a startled Kakashi through the Tenchi Bridge operation, from Naruto's four-tailed rampage to the clash with Orochimaru, and Kakashi braces for the training demands ahead. In Tsunade's office, Yamato confirms her suspicion: Danzo dispatched Sai to kill Sasuke and deny Orochimaru a vessel, and the envelope Sai was told to deliver holds the files of the Hokage Guard Platoon's Anbu. Furious, Tsunade has Shizune tighten security. Sai, meanwhile, reports his first-ever failure to Danzo, who grudgingly lets him keep his name and posting while warning that feeling breeds hatred. Torn between Sasuke's bitterness and Naruto's warmth, Sai picks the latter, and just as he sits to paint, Naruto calls up from the window with the team ready for their next assignment.

Episode 53 of Shippuden adapts chapters 309 and 310 within the Tenchi Bridge Reconnaissance Mission, airing in Japan on April 3, 2008, and in English on October 27, 2010. It carries the opening "Distance" and the ending "Awaken! Wild." This installment is also the final one produced in the older 4:3 standard-definition frame; every episode after it switched to widescreen 16:9 high definition.
