Turned on by the very people they were escorting, Rin and Kakashi get relief when Minato and Obito swoop in, though one of the two turncoats slips away. The remaining escortee urges Minato to check whether the scroll is genuine, since a pair of scrolls had been handed out. The document proves counterfeit, meaning the true one went down with the escortee who fell earlier. Obito bolts off to rescue that man, and the rest trail after him with hesitation. Enemy shinobi corner the fallen escortee and set upon him, but Obito and Kakashi reach the scene just in time to pull him out.

During the scramble one pursuer snatches the scroll and the enemy pulls back. Declaring that finishing the mission is his ninja way, Kakashi breaks off alone to chase and strike the group. Obito flashes a signal to Minato and reports what Kakashi is doing, and the Fourth arrives to save his student and wipe out the attackers. Team Minato hands over the scroll and completes the assignment, only to learn afterward that they were bait: both scrolls were fakes, and a separate team carried the real one to keep it out of enemy hands. Back in the present, Madara hurls two orbs at Obito and Kakashi to claim the Rinnegan and Kurama's Yin half.

With Kakashi's assistance, Obito warps himself to the Kamui dimension, convinces Sakura that he has truly changed, and begins channeling the tailed beasts' chakra into Naruto. In the real world, Guy shows up at the last instant to spare Kakashi from Madara's assault. This Shippūden episode adapts chapter 666 within the Birth of the Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki arc, and a trivia note flags a continuity slip: Kakashi uses the Chidori in the flashback, though canonically Team Minato only learned of the technique during the later Kannabi Bridge mission.
